Dear Friends and Schoolmates,   
 
 We have even more sad news to report. 
  Herman Baker, Class of 1938, father of Herman Baker of VA, Charlie Baker of VA, and David Baker of VA - and I think father-in-law of Sherry Mitchem Baker ('65) of VA, passed away in Newport News on Monday, March 2, 2009 at the age of 88.

Herman Douglas Baker, Sr.
 
  NEWPORT NEWS - Herman Douglas Baker Sr., born July 2, 1920, to the late Samuel F. and Bulah P. Baker, passed away Monday, March 2, 2009.

Herman was a 1938 graduate of Newport News High School, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and served from 1942-1945. He retired as a funeral assistant at Peninsula Funeral Home.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Respess Baker; a brother, Leslie Baker; and a sister, Emily B. Richardson.
 
 
 

Herman is survived by three sons, Herman D. Baker Jr. and wife, Sherry of Yorktown, Freeman C. Baker of Yorktown and Betsy of Poquoson, and David B. Baker and wife, Leslie of Newport News; four grandchildren, Kimberly B. Geddes of Yorktown, Stephanie B. Young of Powder Springs, Ga., Amy Loyd of Yorktown, and Becky Hudgins of Poquoson; seven great-grandchildren, Stephen and Shelby Loyd, Hayden Young, Haley and Collin Hudgins, Elizabeth 'Lizzie' and Will Geddes; a sister-in-law, Gloria R. Thompson and husband, Donald of Mathews; and a brother-in-law, Joseph C. Butler.

The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Services will immediately follow visitation and burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park.

Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Herman and family,
Please accept my deepest sympathy at the loss of your father. I last talked to him while he was working at Peninsula. We were remembering the Baker family home on E. Commodore and all the good times there. He was a very kind man. Herman, we still miss you in Williamsburg FF.
