Dear Friends and Schoolmates,    

   There is more sad news this early Wednesday morning.    Norma Roady, older sister of    Bill Roady ('60) of VA, passed away in Newport News on Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the age of 82.

              Norma Lou Roady

  NEWPORT NEWS - Norma Lou Roady, 82, died on Sunday, March 1, 2009, at her home.

Born in Florence, S.C., and raised in Newport News, she retired back to Newport News after a long and distinguished career teaching and coaching at Averett University in Danville. She graduated from Longwood College with a degree in Physical Education and received her Master's of Education from the University of Virginia.

Norma Roady spent the first 12 years of her career teaching in the Danville Public School System. She spent the next 30 years as a physical education teacher at Averett University where she coached field hockey and basketball and later became the Department Chair. Ms. Roady was the foundation of Averett's Physical Education, Wellness/Sports Medicine Dept. and athletic program as they exist today. The Norma L. Roady Senior Academic Excellence Award was developed to honor Roady's influence on physical education at Averett University.

She is survived by her brother, Bill Roady and his wife, Diane, of Parksley; her eight nieces and nephews, Chip Roady and his wife, Colleen, of Chesapeake, Michael C. Roady of Short Pump, John S. Roady of Chester, Gloria Williams and her husband, Bob, of Milwaukee, Wis., Cindy Limeberger and her husband, Randy, of Cartersville, Ga., Amy Minter and her husband, Michael, of Melbourne, Fla., Allison Heckling and her husband, Eddy, of Millboro, and Elizabeth Roady of Raleigh, N.C.; her dear friend, Carolyn Pully, and a host of loving family, neighbors, colleagues and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, March 6, 2009, at Peninsula Memorial Park.
