03/01/10 - NNHS Newsletter - Martenitza!

“The sun is brilliant in the sky but its warmth does not reach my face.
The breeze stirs the trees but leaves my hair unmoved.
The cooling rain will feed the grass but will not slake my thirst.
It is all inches away but further from me than my dreams."

- M. Romeo LaFlamme, “The First of March"

Thanks so much for the information. I will pray for the family and friends (of Bunny Dinwiddie,  Willie Gilliam, and David Page). I lost my precious mother in 1987. She was only 65 and way too young to leave us. I miss her every day.

Thank you for the hard work and effort you put into this for us. You're awesome ! ! !

Thank you, Dear Bridget! I'm so glad you've rejoined us; we go back a long way!

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) of VA - 02/27/10 - "Viet Nam Wall...":

This is a pretty amazing site.

Someone spent a lot of time on this and it is truly remarkable.....

Someone sent me the link below which is a virtual wall of all those lost during the Viet Nam war with the names, bio's and other information on our lost comrades. It is a very interesting link, and those  who served in that time frame and lost friends or family can look them up on this site.  Pass it on to other veterans who you think would like this.

First click on a state......then when it opens .........a town.............a name.......follow on and then  it should show you a picture of the person or  at least his bio and medals......

http://www.virtualwall.org/iStates.htm

Thank you so much, Norris! We've had several people joining us since we last looked at this, and it's too important a site to have anyone miss it!

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of IL -  02/27/10 - "Ain't it the truth?":

THE SPOILED UNDER-30 CROWD!!!

If you are 30 or older you will think this is hilarious!!!!

When I was a kid, adults used to bore me to tears with their tedious diatribes about how hard things were. When they were growing up; what with walking twenty-five miles to school every morning....

Uphill... Barefoot...

BOTH ways

Yadda, yadda, yadda

And I remember promising myself that when I grew up, there was no way in hell I was going to lay a bunch of crap like that on my kids about how hard I had it and how easy they've got it!

But now that... I'm over the ripe old age of thirty, I can't help but look around and notice the youth of today.

You've got it so easy! I mean, compared to my childhood, you live in a dang Utopia!

And I hate to say it, but you kids today, you don't know how good you've got it!

I mean, when I was a kid we didn't have The Internet. If we wanted to know something, we had to go to the darn library and look it up ourselves, in the card catalogue!!

There was no email!!  We had to actually write somebody a letter - with a pen!

Then you had to walk all the way across the street and put it in the mailbox and it would take, like, a week to get there!  Stamps were 10 cents!

Child Protective Services didn't care if our parents beat us.  As a matter of fact, the parents of all my friends also had permission to kick our butt! Nowhere was safe!

There were no MP3' s or Napsters!  If you wanted to steal music, you had to hitchhike to the darn record store and shoplift it yourself!

Or you had to wait around all day to tape it off the radio and the DJ would usually talk over the beginning and @#*% it all up! There were no CD players!  We had tape decks in our car  We'd play our favorite tape and "eject" it when finished and the tape would come undone.  Cause - that's how we rolled, dig?

We didn't have fancy crap like Call Waiting!  If you were on the phone and somebody else called they got a busy signal, that's it!

And we didn't have fancy Caller ID either! When the phone rang, you had no idea who it was! It could be your school, your mom, your boss, your bookie, your drug dealer, a collections agent, you just didn't know!!! You had to pick it up and take your chances, mister!

We didn't have any fancy Sony Playstation video games with high-resolution 3-D graphics! We had the Atari 2600! With games like 'Space Invaders' and 'Asteroids'. Your guy was a little square! You actually had to use your imagination!! And there were no multiple levels or screens, it was just one screen... Forever!

And you could never win.. The game just kept getting harder and harder and faster and faster until you died! Just like LIFE!

You had to use a little book called a TV Guide to find out what was on! You were screwed when it came to channel surfing!  You had to get off your butt and walk over to the TV to change the channel!  NO REMOTES!!!

There was no Cartoon Network either! You could only get cartoons on Saturday Morning. Do you hear what I'm saying!?! We had to wait ALL WEEK for cartoons, you spoiled little brats.

And we didn't have microwaves, if we wanted to heat something up we had to use the stove!  Imagine that!

That's exactly what I'm talking about!  You kids today have got it too easy. You're spoiled.  You guys wouldn't have lasted five minutes back in 1980 or before!

Regards,
The Over 30 Crowd

   Thanks, Paul!

From Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA - 02/27/10 - "THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT HERE!":

Carol,

I feel I must warn everyone in the Great TYPHOON Nation about this. Please include it in the news letter ASAP!

Thanks, Jerry B. (Class or 62) of Va.

We are under attack:-----

THIS IS HAPPENING RIGHT HERE IN OUR OWN COUNTRY!

We Must Stop This Immediately!

Have you noticed that stairs are getting steeper.  Groceries are heavier. And, everything is farther away.  Yesterday I walked to the corner and I was dumbfounded to discover how long    our street had become!
And, you know, people are less considerate now, especially the young ones.  They speak in whispers  all the time!  If you ask them to speak up they just keep repeating themselves, endlessly mouthing the same silent message until they're red in the face!  What do they think I am a lip reader?

I also think they are much younger than I was at the same age.  On the other hand, people my own age are so much older than I am.  I ran into an old friend the other day and she has aged so much that she didn't even recognize me.

I got to thinking about the poor dear while I was combing my hair this morning, and in doing so, I glanced at my own reflection...well, REALLY NOW - even mirrors are not made the way they used to be!

Another thing, everyone drives so fast these days!  You're risking life and limb if you happen to pull onto the freeway in front of them.  All I can say is, their brakes must wear out awfully fast, the way I see them screech and swerve in my rear view mirror.

Clothing manufacturers are less civilized these days.  Why else would they suddenly start labeling a size 10 or 12 dress as 18 or 20?  Do they think no one notices?

The people who make bathroom scales are pulling the same prank.  Do they think I actually 'believe' the number I see on that dial?  HA!  I would never let myself weigh that much!  Just who do these people think they're fooling?
I'd like to call up someone in authority to report what's going on -- but the telephone company is in on the conspiracy too: they've printed the phone books in such
small   type that no one could ever find a number in there!

All I can do is pass along this warning:

WE ARE UNDER ATTACK!
Unless something drastic happens, pretty soon everyone will have to suffer these awful indignities.

PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO WE CAN GET THIS CONSPIRACY STOPPED!

PS: I am sending this to you in a larger font size, because something has happened to my computer's fonts - they are smaller than they once were.

     BOY HOWDY!!! Thanks, Jerry!

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of IL -  02/27/10 - "Wisdom of a Private":

Is Sex Work?

A U.S. Marine Colonel was about to start the morning briefing to his staff..

While waiting for the coffee machine to finish brewing, the colonel decided to pose a question to all assembled.

He explained that his wife had been a bit frisky the night before and he failed to get his usual amount of sound sleep.

He posed the question of just how much of sex was "work" and how much of it was "pleasure?"

A Major chimed in with 75%-25% in favor of work.

A Captain said it was 50%-50%.

A lieutenant responded with 25%-75% in favor of pleasure, depending upon his state of inebriation at the time.

There being no consensus, the colonel turned to the PFC who was in charge of making the coffee and asked for HIS opinion?

Without any hesitation, the young PFC responded, "Sir, it has to be 100% pleasure."

The colonel was surprised and as you might guess, asked why?

"Well, sir, if there was any work involved, the officers would have me doing it for them."

The room fell silent.

God Bless the enlisted man.

   Thanks again, Dools!

FINALLY:

From ArcaMax Jokes - 02/278/10:

Red Lights

Two elderly women were out driving in a large car - both could barely see over the dashboard. As they were cruising along, they came to an intersection. The stoplight was red, but they just went on through. The woman in the passenger seat thought to herself "I must be losing it. I could have sworn we just went through a red light."

After a few more minutes, they came to another intersection and the light was red again. Again, they went right through. The woman in the passenger seat was almost sure that the light had been red but was really concerned that she was losing it. She was getting nervous.

At the next intersection, sure enough, the light was red and they went on through. So, she turned to the other woman and said, "Mildred, did you know that we just ran through three red lights in a row? You could have killed us both!" Mildred turned to her and said, "Oh my! Am I driving?"
