PRAYER REQUEST:
From Sydney Dearing ('56) of TN - 02/25/09 - "Cards for
Donald Spencer NNHS '56":
Carolyn Simpson Knight ('56 - of VA) about
Donnie Spencer, a classmate of mine and am
passing it along at her request. Donnie is in the Riverside Hospital battling
cancer. I don't know the particulars but I thought it might be a good idea to
add his name to the Prayer Roll.
Hi All,
My brother
Harry (Simpson - '54) has visited Donnie several times at Riverside
Hospital. Donnie continues to have treatments for his cancer. If you would
like, let’s “shower” Donnie with get well or thoughts of you cards to let him
know he is in our thoughts and prayers. His address is Riverside Hospital,
Room 415, 500 J. Clyde Morris Blvd, N.News 23601.
There’re lots of classmates I don’t have email addresses for, but please pass the word. Thanks!!
Typhoons forever!!
Carolyn Simpson Knight
I'm
so sorry to hear this news, Sydney - and Carolyn - but thank so much for letting
us know!
I added Donnie's name to the
Prayer Roll this morning:

From
Me

The obvious is often - usually - lost on me.
I never realized that
Harry Simpson ('54) of VA
and
Carolyn Simpson Knight ('56) of VA were siblings

From David Whitley ('67) of VA - 02/23/09
- "The 710 Knob":
Too good not to pass on!!
Does your vehicle have a 710 knob? I'll bet it does!
What is a 710 knob?
A few days ago I was having some work done at my local garage. A blonde came in
and asked for a seven-hundred-ten knob.
We all looked at each other and another customer asked, 'What is a seven-hundred-ten knob?'
She replied, 'You know, the little piece in the middle of the engine, I have lost it and need a new one.. '
She replied that she did not know exactly what it was, but this piece had always been there.
The mechanic gave her a piece
of paper and a pen and asked her to draw what the piece looked like.
She drew a circle and in the middle of it wrote 710.
He then took her over to another car which had its hood up and asked, 'is there a 710 on this car?'
She pointed and said, 'Of course, its right there.'
If you're not sure what a 710

WILD GIGGLES!!!

From My Niece, Renee Dick Romulus (Booker T. Washington HS - '80) of Northern
VA - 02/24/09:
Hi, Renee! Other than various aches and pains, we are doing well! Settling in?!? Well, that depends on whether you mean "stuff" or routines. Every time I think we almost have our things arranged, someone discovers either another box which must be unpacked and put away or a missing item which must be found (same results), and the mess begins anew.
And I'm beginning to
think our daily routines are may be permanently trashed, but that's okay, too.
At the moment we have ZERO
responsibilities, so if we choose to stay awake half the night and sleep half
the day, WHO CARES?!?
Thanks,
Nee - love you, too!
We'll get back on a regular schedule
soon!

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA -
02/24/09 - "Planning to Attend NNHS 64/45 Reunion":
Please add to "Planning To Attend" :
Cissy Wilkinson of VA

From My #2 Daughter-in-Law,
Bethany Winona Harty
(Siuslaw HS, OR - '94) of TX - 02/24/09:
Just wanted to let you know that it was 84 degrees (here in El Paso) today. Not that I'm bragging or anything....... ROFLMBO!!!
GIGGLES!
Are you implying that it might be COLD here in Illinois?!?
Why, we made it to 50 degrees here
yesterday - and it seems to be 64 degrees today!
Thanks, Bethany - miss you!

From
Glenn Dye
('60) of TX - 02/24/09 - "Every
teachers nightmare":
LITTLE JOHNNY...
Little Johnny's at it again......
A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her
class by saying, 'Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!' After a few
seconds, Little Johnny stood up.
The teacher said, 'Do you think you're stupid, Little Johnny?'
'No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!'
* * * * * * * * * * *
Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her
face.
'Why do you do that, Mommy?' he asked.
'To make myself beautiful,' said his mother, who then began removing the cream
with a tissue.
'What's the matter?' asked Little Johnny. 'Giving up?'
* * * * * * * * * * * *
The math teacher saw that little Johnny wasn't paying attention in class. She
called on him and said, 'Johnny! What are 2 and 4 and 28 and 44?
' Little Johnny quickly replied, 'NBC, FOX, ESPN and the Cartoon Network!'
* * * * * * * * * * *
Little Johnny's kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police
station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted
criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was
the photo of a wanted person.
'Yes,' said the policeman. 'The detectives want very badly to capture him.
'Little Johnny asked, 'Why didn't you keep him when you took his picture?'
MORE GIGGLES!
Thanks, Glenn! ![]()

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of
VA - 02/24/09 - "Gynecologist turned Mechanic":
|
Gynecologist turned mechanic A gynecologist had become so fed up with malpractice insurance and HMO paperwork that he was burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to become a mechanic. He went to the local technical college, signed up for classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could. When the time for the practical exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for weeks and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had obtained a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the instructor, saying, "I don't want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wonder if there is an error in the grade. The instructor said, "During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. "You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark." This equaled an A. After a pause, the instructor
added, "I gave you an extra 50% because you did it all through the muffler,
which I've never seen done in my entire career. |
WILDER GIGGLES!
Thanks, Joyce! ![]()

From Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA - 02/24/09:
Dear Carol,
While at my local Food Lion buying some good old Good and Plenty in its festive
pink and white box, the cashier asked if I knew the song that went with it
involving a train. (nope, not me.)
Boy, I said to myself, I bet that Carol knows......
Do you remember a TV commercial for Good and Plenty -- with train ?
Linda May
Good and Plenty?? I LOVE Good and Plenty! But no, I can't recall their commercial off hand.....
Wait a minute, did you say TRAIN?!?
Oh,
my goodness!
I betcha
Jean (Poole
Burton - '64 - of RI)
would remember! Or maybe
Joe (Madagan - '57 - of FL)!!
David (Spriggs - '64 - of VA),
surely you know where to find this commercial! I would have looked
myself, but I totally collapsed with laughter when I heard the train connection!

From
Wayne
Stokes ('65) of VA - 02/24/09
- "York Drive-In":
CBD,
Sarah
Sugah's (Puckett Kressaty - '65 - of VA) question regarding where the
York Drive-In was located, it was where the Wal-Mart Super Center
now stands at the intersection of route #17 and Victory Boulevard. That's the
only one that I know of that was ever in York County. When the Drive-In was
there Victory Boulevard didn't exist!AHA! Thanks, Wayne Honey!

From Eric Huffstutler (Bethel HS - '75)
of VA - 02/24/09 - "York Drive-In":
Carol,
Hope you are feeling better. I am sure it is in part not being use to such
extreme cold weather in Illinois.
Yup, there was a York Drive-In and knew it was there. Still
trying to zero in on it as it wasn't in Newport News nor Hampton but in Tabb,
Va.
Ahh... here we go. It was built in 1947 but closed in 1972 - 270 Cars.
Was owned at that time by Moe Cohen. Torn down and reopened in 1974 as Cinema
City Drive-In and had 2 screens and an indoor theater on the same site but shut
down in 1990. Has since been torn down and a Wal-Mart Super Center stands there
today at the corner of Rt17 and Victory Blvd. Will check for the "theater"
address but the Wal-Mart one is 2601 George Washington Memorial Highway, Tabb,
VA 23693 - about 1 mile outside of the Newport News limits.
Eric
COOL BEANS! Thank you so much, Eric!

http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/york-drive-in.html - brand new page!
We'll return to the movies soon.....

Dave Spriggs ('64 - of VA).......THANK
YOU soooo much for the pictures of the two banks. Bank of Hampton was
indeed Merchant's National Bank in the 60's. Of course, it didn't look
like the picture.....changes over the years, I suppose.
Eric Huffstutler's (Bethel HS
- '75 - of VA)
list of theaters.......Riverside on Cunningham Drive was actually
Riverdale theater. Not on his list is the Centre Theatre (could be wrong
on the spelling) on Kecoughtan Road in the Sussex Shopping Center. Carol,
you probably have all these already on the site page.
GIGGLES!!! That no doubt
explains it, Gloria! Thanks, that would be lovely! ![]()
We'll return to the movies tomorrow.....

From Ronnie Timberlake ('67) of FL - 02/24/09:
What a fabulous job you have done!!! Thank you! To fill in some blanks….
Captain 1967 Cross Country Team: Ronnie Timberlake
Co-Captains of 1967 Track Team: David Cutler - Ronnie Timberlake
Thanks for your tremendous work!!!
Ron T.
Thanks, Ronnie!
BLANKS?!?
Honey, those aren't blanks, those are big chunks of missing pieces!
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/SITE-MAP.html
http://www.nnhs65.00freehost.com/TRACK.html
No matter, if someone didn't nudge me on a regular basis, none of this site would exist at all! Okay, I'll fire up the scanner and see what I can do about creating a page for the 1967 Track Team - soon.

From
Me
('65) of IL - 02/25/09 - "Movies, Banks, and Track and Field":
There
will be more definitive sorted-out information on these three subjects in
the next edition or so - by which time hopefully my head will have stopped
swimming.....

FINALLY:
From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of
VA - 02/24/09 - "This one made me laugh out loud :-)":
Never Choke in a Restaurant in the South!
Two hillbillies walk into a restaurant. While
having a bite to eat, they talk about their moonshine operation.
Suddenly, a woman at a nearby table, who is eating a sandwich, begins to
cough. After a minute or so, it becomes apparent that she is in real distress.
One of the hillbillies looks at her and says,
'Kin ya swallar?'
The woman shakes her head no.
Then he asks, 'Kin ya breathe?'
The woman begins to turn blue and shakes her head no.
The hillbilly
walks over to the woman, lifts up her dress, yanks down her drawers and
quickly gives her right butt cheek a lick with his tongue.
The woman is so shocked that she has a violent spasm and the obstruction flies
out of her mouth.
As she begins to breathe again,
the Hillbilly walks slowly back to his table.
His partner says, 'Ya know, I'd heerd of that there 'Hind Lick Maneuver' but I
ain't niver seed nobody do it!
Thanks
again, Joyce! ![]()

Kiss from a Rose
-
Seal,1994
(b. 19. Feb 1963)
Intro:
Pa ra ra pa ra ra pa ra
Ra ra
Pa ra ra...
There used to be a graying
Tower all alone on the sea
You became the light of the dark side of me
Love remained a drawbridge
Not high enough to feel
But did you know that when it snowed
My eyes become large
And the light that you shine can't be seen
Baby, I can play a tune
A kiss from a rose on the grave
Oh, the more I get of you
A stranger who fills the air
And now that your rose is in bloom
A light hits the gloom of the grave
There's so much a man can tell you
So much you can say
You remained my power, my pleasure, my pain
(Baby) To me you're like a wrong addiction that I can't deny
Won't you tell me, is it healthy babe?
I've been kissed by a rose on the grave
I've been kissed by the rose on the grave
I've been kissed by the rose on the grave
I've been kissed by the rose on the grave
I've been kissed by the rose on the grave
I've been kissed by the rose on the grave
I've been kissed by the rose on the grave
