02/24/10 - NNHS Newsletter - Tears

“Oh, I am very weary,
Though tears no longer flow;
My eyes are tired of weeping,
My heart is sick of woe
.”

- Anne Brontë
(17 Jan 1820 - 28 May 1849)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

My #5 son,        Nathaniel (Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL - '97 - of IL), has about 496 bazillion songs (give or take) on his computer play list which is somehow connected to the television, so whenever we gather downstairs to play games, he turns it on to provide background music.  Whenever I hear something which catches my fancy, I make note of it.  This is one of those songs.

   Thanks, Nathaniel!

From Sydney Dearing ('56) of TN - 02/23/10 - "Iwo Jima photos":

Hi Carol,

A friend of mine that I had served with in the Air Force knew that my dad was on Iwo Jima 65 years ago and sent me these remarkable pictures. Since today is the 65th anniversary of the flag raising on Mt. Suribachi, I thought some of our classmates might be interested in seeing these. It is a rather long slide show (I think I counted 127 pictures) but you can adjust the photo dwell time at the bottom or you can just click through them manually pretty fast. There are a few very familiar shots, but most of these I had never seen before. I will warn you that some of the photos early in the presentation (photos 17-25) are true combat shots of the aftermath of a Japanese kamakazi attack near the end of the battle and are not easy to view. Included are 2 or 3 photos taken on Okinawa that somehow got included, but nearly all of the pictures here were taken between Feb 19th through April 1945 during the battle of Iwo Jima or shortly after it ended when the island was being used as a launching pad for raids on Japan.

Standing on the sidelines during a football game at my son's high school, I saw one of the players take a hard hit. He tumbled to the ground and didn't move. We grabbed our first-aid gear and rushed out onto the field.

The coach picked up the young man's hand and urged, "Son, can you hear me? Squeeze once for yes and twice for no."

Good Help

I want you to know how thankful I am that someone was kind enough to ask me to subscribe. My husband is unemployed, as Congress did not see fit to fund his job again. He works for the Forest Service. Each day, I am thankful that I can turn my computer on and there you are and will be as long as I have the computer running.

I wanted to share with you, my son.

His name is T. He was oxygen deprived at birth. What he was not deprived of was love.

One day not to long ago, my husband (his step-father) heard him in the shower. He was carrying on a very active conversation. When asked who he was speaking with, T replied, "GOD."

God?

"What was God doing in your shower?" I asked. "He was very grungy," said T.

"Why?" "He was working on his Limo, and he needed a shower. I said he could use mine," replied T.

"Why doesn't he get someone else to work on his limo?" I questioned. (T says that God drives a white stretch limo that goes 100,000 mph).

T replied, "Because GOD just can't get good help these days."

I think that if T could read MountainWings, he would see that there are those who help Him very well.

I just thought I would pass this along to you. T is 8 years old in his head, and 21 in years of growth. I asked him once why he was here. He replied, "Why, I was sent to help you, Mom." I cried and held on to him for a long time.

He has helped me so very much, and so many others as well.
Thank you for being here to help me too.
May the Creator Bless all of you for your gifts.
We Love You

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 02/22/10 - "Good reminder ... The Mayonnaise Jar":

This is a new one, at least to me. A wise man!!

"The richest person is not the one who has the most, but the one who needs the least."  (author unknown)

The Mayonnaise Jar

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day is not enough; remember the mayonnaise jar and 2 cups of coffee.

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.

When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and start to fill it with golf balls.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured it into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous 'yes.'

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand.

The students laughed ...

'Now,' said the professor, as the laughter subsided, 'I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.

'The golf balls are the important things - God, family, children, health, friends, and favorite passions; things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.

'The pebbles are the things that matter like your job, house, and car.

'The sand is everything else -- the small stuff.

'If you put the sand into the jar first,' he continued, 'there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life.

'If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

So ...

'Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner.

'There will always be time to clean the house and fix the dripping tap.

'Take care of the golf balls first -- The things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.'

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented.

The professor smiled.

'I'm glad you asked'. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.'

Please share this with other "Golf Balls".

I just did ...

Thank you, Wayne Honey! This is a good 'un!

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) of VA - 02/23/10 - "The Back Pew":

The Back Pew

A pastor's wife was expecting a baby, so he stood before the congregation and asked for a raise. After much discussion, they passed a rule that whenever the preacher's family expanded, so would his paycheck.

After 6 children, this started to get expensive and the congregation decided to hold another meeting to discuss the preacher's expanding salary. A great deal of yelling and inner bickering ensued, as to how much the clergyman's additional children were costing the church, and how much more it could potentially cost.

After listening to them for about an hour, the pastor rose from his chair and spoke, 'Children are a gift from God, and we will take as many gifts as He gives us. Silence fell on the congregation.

In the back pew, a little old lady struggled to stand, and finally said in her frail voice, 'Rain is also a gift from God, but when we get too much of it, we wear rubbers.'

The entire congregation said, 'Amen.'

   MORE GIGGLES! Thanks, Norris!

FINALLY:

From ArcaMax Jokes - 02/22/10:

Spelling It Out

My husband and I often spell words so that our small children won't understand what we're saying. I didn't realize what a habit this had become until one day when my husband and I were in the grocery store at the soup aisle. An aggressive young woman banged into our cart, then nudged me over, blocking my access to the soup. Annoyed, I looked at my husband and said, "Boy, is she r-u-d-e!"

"Yeah," he replied, "and I'll bet she can s-p-e-l-l."

Tears

Written by Geddy Lee
(b. 29 July 1953)

Recorded by Rush, 1976

All of the seasons and all of the days
All of the reasons why I've felt this way
So long...
So long

Then lost in that feeling I looked in your eyes
I noticed emotion and that you had cried
For me
I can see

What would touch me deeper...
Tears that fall from eyes that only cry?
Would it touch you deeper
Than tears that fall from eyes that know why?

A lifetime of questions, tears on your cheek
I tasted the answers and my body was weak
For you
The truth

What would touch me deeper...
Tears that fall from eyes that only cry?
Would it touch you deeper
Than tears that fall from eyes that know why?
