Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Today's Holiday
Newsletter is being revisited from
02/24/09, wherein I said:
When I was a
little girl, I always wanted to go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. My mama,
the late Maxine Frix Buckley (John
Marshall HS - '25), quietly said she didn't think I'd really enjoy it
as much as I thought I might. I couldn't understand why on earth she'd
think such a thing. I mean, c'mon, an entire city having what
seemed to me to be the equivalent of a giant costume party - complete with
parades?!? I was pretty sure she must be mistaken, but it would have been
quite rude and unseemly of me to argue with (i.e. "backtalk") my mama, so
of course I didn't.
Knowing what I do now, I'm certain that she was correct; it just isn't quite what I imagined, just not my style, n'est pas? It's amazing how much our mothers knew all along, isn't it?
So it wasn't the Real Me after all, but, hey, we're here to celebrate together, so here ya go!

River to Pray":

I really liked that movie
and would like to see it again because I think I missed some of the
deeper parts. Your e-mail reminded of some photos I took in Aug. 2008 on our way to Branson, Missouri with our friends, Sonny and Tricia. We had stopped at a rest stop on the interstate and while I waited for the rest of them to return to the car I saw some activity through the trees at a little park off the highway with a small stream running by. The park and stream were below the parking area of the rest stop and had it's own access road with no access from the interstate. I thought is was interesting so I got my camera and walked over to the fence and took these photos. I zoomed in for two and one to show the distance. It looked like all young white children with their parents and a black minister. So they were going "Down in the River to Pray". You can see the photos here: Lloyd
Thank you so much,
Lloyd!

- Hunter's Stew - "This stew got its name because it was the food of choice taken by Polish hunters on hunting trips. For more authentic taste, substitute Polish sausage for the smoked sausage. Pair this stew with rye or pumpernickel bread and full-bodied beer for a one-dish meal that's sure to please the heartiest eater."WEBMISTRESS' NOTE: Akshully (English major, ya know), this offering doesn't interest me at all. I don't drink beer, I can't abide sauerkraut, and the thought of big ol' chunks of tomatoes floating around in my stew doesn't thrill me either. And where's the beef?? I'm just saying.....
