02/18/13 - NNHS Newsletter - Ivory Tower

“Living in a tower, however secure it may feel, is hardly a social attribute.”

- Dirk Bogarde
(28 Mar 1921 - 08 May 1999)

“I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself
in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me.”

- Sir Isaac Newton
(25 Dec 1642 - 20 Mar 1727 [NS: 04 Jan 1643 - 31 March 1727] )

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

The theme song for today's Newsletter was released in two very popular versions in 1956.  I quickly memorized it and belted it out whenever possible - which, given the lyrics, must have sounded a bit strange, coming from a nine-year old.

While I was a big fan of Gale Storm as an actress, I personally vastly preferred Cathy Carr's rendition of the song.  See what you think:

BONUS #1 - - Ivory Tower - Cathy Carr, 1956

BONUS #2 - - Ivory Tower - Gale Storm, 1956

"Ivory Tower" is a popular song written by Jack Fulton and Lois Steele. Popular versions by Cathy Carr and Gale Storm, and a rhythm & blues version by Otis Williams and the Charms all received major popularity in 1956. Carr's version reached #2 and Storm's #6 on the Billboard pop charts, while Williams' version reached #11 on Billboard's R&B chart.

Sylvia’s brother, Allan Hall, passed away peacefully under hospice care today, February 17 around 7 AM in Boca Raton, Florida. He was a great guy, 3 purple hearts from several tours in Viet Nam. He served as a Ranger in the173rd Airborne and was highly decorated. We spent the last week with him, along with his daughter Tracy (her mother is Sheila Blackman Hall class of 1964), our daughter Jennifer Douglas, and some of his friends. He will be buried with full military honors in a national cemetery yet to be determined. He was only 71 but lived the life he wanted; his favorite saying from the days as a Ranger, “Mess with the Best, die with the rest.”

Phil & Sylvia Hammond

OH, NO! I am quite shocked and saddened to learn this, but thank you for letting me know. Y'all have my deepest sympathies!

For all of you that need a little Sabbath morning smile.

When dueling a super-hero a villain needs a nice repertoire of evil gadgetry - in a pinch, improvise.

Great job, Dale! Keep having fun with your baby chicks!

A standing ovation at Carnegie Hall playing a simple harmonica!

It took the Lone Ranger theme song to bring them to their feet.
Turn up the volume! Enjoy!

(Just hope you don't have to explain who the Lone Ranger is.....)

Ivory Tower

Written by Jack Fulton and Lois Steele

Recorded by Cathy Carr, 1956

Recorded by Gale Storm, 1956
(05 Apr 1922 - 27 June 2009)

Come down come down from your ivory tower
Let love come in to your heart
Don't lock yourself in your ivory tower
Don't keep us so far apart
I love you I love you
Are you too far above me to hear
Come down come down from your ivory tower
You'll find true love has its charms
It's so cold so cold in your ivory tower
But warm so warm in my arms
I love you I love you
