WILLIAMSBURG - Barbara Beck Stephenson, 82, of Williamsburg, died Monday, Feb. 16, 2009.

She was born on Oct. 22, 1926, in Winchester, Va., to William Ernest and Meta Grim Beck. Mrs. Stephenson later moved to Newport News and graduated from Newport News High School, where she met the love of her life, Elmo Stephenson. When Elmo joined the Navy at a very young age, she knew that she would wait for him and be with him for eternity.

Barbara was active in various community organizations during her lifetime, but her passion was being a loving wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Throughout their years together, she was the quiet encourager to her beloved Elmo. Their mutual love and admiration brought them together in life, and upon Elmo's death on January 21, 2009, Barbara realized that she was lost without him.

Dear Family, I am so sorry for the loss of your Mom and Dad. We remember the good times we had when living in James Landing and having your folks open their gorgeous home for Garden Tour week for my Garden Club. I know they both touched the lives of many and you were so fortunate to have 2 wonderful parents.

O Lord of Life, Where'er They Be

- Lyrics by
Frederick L. Hosmer, 1888; Music by Melchior Vulpius (circa 1560-1615)

O Lord of life, where’er they be,
Safe in Thine own eternity,
Our dead are living unto Thee:
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

All souls are Thine, and here or there
They rest within Thy sheltering care;
One providence alike they share:
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Thy Word is true, Thy ways are just;
Above the requiem, “Dust to dust,”
Shall rise our psalm of grateful trust:
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

O happy they in God who rest,
No more by fear and doubt oppressed,
Living or dying, they are blest:
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
