Galileo's 445th Birthday

“In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth
the humble reasoning of a single individual.”

- Galileo Galilei
(15 Feb 1564 - 08 Jan 1642)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Oh, did you remember today's celebrity birthday???

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 02/09/09 - "RE: Galileo MIDI":

... Despite his range of scientific interests, no song pops out as uniquely associated with him.

OK, this may be "geekily" esoteric, but here goes:

Galileo is uniquely associated with the planet Jupiter. With his telescope, he discovered the four largest moons of Jupiter.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galileo_Galilei

When NASA launched a 14-year mission to Jupiter on October 18, 1989, it was named, "Galileo Mission to Jupiter".

That provides us an opportunity to use music associated with Jupiter. OK, I know that you are already ahead of me here ....

Thank you, Captain! I have a particular fondness for the "geekily" esoteric - and thanks so much for all the background information!

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nz0b4STz1lo - Gustav Holst - The Planets - Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity

"English composer Gustav Holst composed The Planets between 1914 and 1916. The Birmingham premiere of the suite took place in 1918, fifteen years before Pluto was discovered. Though the Planets became by far the most popular work of Holst's and one of the most known pieces by an English-born composer, Holst did not consider the piece one of his finest. Partially because of this, he never wrote an eighth movement, though unexpectedly the IAU relegated Pluto from its status as planet proper in 2006." - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_A-LNkuqq6g

PRAYER ALERT:

From Me ('65) of IL - 02/14/09 - "      My #3 Son,  Randolph Harty (Hillsboro HS, IL - '92) of IL":

We have a long-standing tradition in our family that every holiday is marked by someone's getting sick, ill, or otherwise indisposed.  After today, the All-Time Prize goes to Randolph who underwent an appendectomy on Valentine's Day.  Blessedly, he arrived at the hospital before it ruptured, and he endured the surgery (at 6:00 PM central time) well. Nevertheless, your prayers in his behalf would be most appreciated.

   Thanks!

I may not be the most important person in your LIFE.

From Betty Brockwell McClure ('58) of VA - 02/14/09 - "    John Bateman ('70 of VA)":

Hi, Carol,

I hope everything is going better for you and your family since your move.  I enjoyed the kittycat pictures.  We have three indoor cats:  Cupcake - 15 1/2, Fred - 9 1/2 and Taz - almost 2.  They are our babies!

Would you please let John Bateman know that Doug and I were sorry to hear of his hospitalization.  We are praying for his recovery and hope that he will be fine again soon.

Happy Valentine's Day to you, Carol.  You are such a Sweetheart to so many of us!

Love,
Betty (Brockwell McClure '58)

   Thank you so much, Betty!

From Al Farber ('64) of GA - 02/14/09 - "RETIREMENT IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE":

RETIREMENT IS DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE

One day, while going to the store, I passed by a nursing home.  On the front lawn were six old ladies lying
naked on the grass.
I thought this was a bit unusual, but continued on my
way to the store.

On my return trip, I passed the same nursing home with the same six old ladies lying naked on the lawn.

This time my curiosity got the best of me, and I went inside to talk to the Nursing Home Administrator.
'Do you know there are six ladies lying naked on your
front lawn?'

'Yes,' she said. 'They're retired
prostitutes; they're having a yard SALE.

   Thanks, Al!

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 02/14/09 - "Duly noted...":

Have put your new address in my notebook!  If it was a snake it would have bitten me...nice to learn about Saran Wrap having a lock...of course if you never cook...haha!

   GIGGLES!!! Thanks, Jean!

From Christine Wilson Starkman ('68) of CA - 02/14/09 - "Killer & Joe":

Just about every Friday I go down to Hermosa beach. My friend Evelyn and I meet at Hennessey's to solve the problems of the world. (And to enjoy the sun, sand, and sandwiches!)

Killer & Joe are always there to greet us. Joe is wheelchair bound, and uses a voice box to speak. Killer is his constant companion. Joe says he'd be lost without him.

Killer & Joe greet all visitors to Hermosa Beach.

These wonderful pictures were taken by my friend, Evelyn Moore.

COOL!!! Thanks so much for sharing these with us, Chris!

From My Friend, Judy, of IL - 02/14/09 - "Floral Delivery":

BEAUTIFUL!!!!

FLORAL DELIVERY...

I would rather have one rose and a kind word from a friend while I'm here than a whole truck load when I'm gone.

THESE ARE FOR YOU .....

  Happiness keeps you Sweet,
Trials keep you Strong,
Sorrows keep you Human,
Failures keep you Humble,
Success keeps you Glowing,
But Only God Keeps You Going!

   Thanks, Jude, these are lovely!

FINALLY:

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of VA - 02/14/09 - "New Diet":

Speaking of New Years resolutions and dieting is usually one of them............

Yesterday I was buying 2 large bags of Purina dog chow at Wal-Mart, for my dogs Winston, Chief, Gus, and Maximus. I was about to check out when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think, that I had an elephant?

Since I had little else to do, on impulse, I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, and that I was starting the Purina Diet again, although I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital last time. On the bright side though, I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of every hole in my body and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and that the way that it works is to load your pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry and that the food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in the line was enthralled with my story by now.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food had poisoned me. I told her no; I had stopped in the middle of the parking lot to lick my butt and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack, he was laughing so hard!

WAL-MART won't let me shop there anymore.

 Joyce Cahoon

      Thanks, Joyce!
