02/15/06 - Old Style NNHS Newsletter - Server Is Still Down

Dear Friends and Classmates,

Sunday night a funny thing happened, but I'm still not laughing.  I had a late meeting, and when I returned that night, Dave (Spriggs ('64 - of VA) told me that the site had gone down at 10:00 PM.  I thought it would be back up in the morning.  It wasn't.  Here it is almost 60 hours later, and it's still down - causing me to miss Lincoln's 197th Birthday, and Valentine's Day, and a few other things.  ARGHHH!

While we're trying to resolve that, I'll quit being bratty long enough to send an interim old-style Newsletter, by using notes which are not image dependent - or dependent on notes which were image dependent - or dependent on pages within the site itself.

Sunday was Jon Pearl's ('57) birthday, Monday was Carla Fine Cripp's ('65 - of Australia) birthday.  There were two Valentine Birthdays - Jimmy Parker ('62) of VA and my niece, Renee Dick Wallace (Booker T. Washington HS - '80) of Northern VA (who was born on Jimmy's 19th Birthday)

A Very Merry Un-Birthday to you all!

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 02/13/06 - "Cannot get the site today...weep weep":

Will try later, Jeanb

From Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI - 02/14/06 - "Unable to get the site...":

Cannot get the site...is is my computer or aol or sumpin else?

From Me ('65) of NC to Jean Poole Burton ('64) of RI and Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 02/14/06 - "ARGHHH!!! the site...":

No, it isn't you, and it isn't me.  That leaves 00freehost.com.  They've been down since 10:00 PM Sunday.  I can't upload anything, let alone send out Sunday's Newsletter ... or yesterday's...   or today's ... or anything.

From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 02/14/06:

BUMMER!!!  Call 'em up ..... but you have already done that, I bet.

Oh - great idea!  Call 'em up!  No,  I hadn't even thought of that.  I was just going to wait until they resolved their difficulties.  Let's see - where would I find their number?  Oh, yeah - it's on their web page - which is down.......

No, wait - I'll try a Google trick!

HA!  Here we go!  Let's see ...  "Contact" - THERE IT IS!  And it's D-O-W-N..........

Sigh.....  Thanks, David - and Jean!

From Sheila Smith Moler ('64) of VA - 02/15/06 - "Website":

Dear Carol:
EEEEEEEKKK!!!  Haven't been able to access your website for several days.....the message says it can't be found.  Hope a gremlin didn't get you again!!

Sheila Moler

Well, no, Sheila, it didn't get me, not really.  It just got us....

Just to make sure (and as I had come across a cool quotation I really wanted to preserve), I tried updating my personal webpage (which I hadn't done in over a year, due to lack of time...):

It works just fine, for all the good that does me:

Oh, the quotation?  That's it near the top on the right:

"People tend to love me or hate me and a lot of them just think I'm annoying."

   Thanks, Sheila!

From Joe Wingo ('65) of NC, President of the Great NNHS Class of 1965 - 02/10/06:

Carol, my dear,

"Puny" was relative. When you're a J. V. player, the highlight of the year was to be selected to come finish the season with the varsity team as they prepared for Turkey Day and the Crabbers. If you were really blessed, you got to dress out and take the field on Thanksgiving Day as a varsity player. In the 8th grade, I was lucky enough to be brought up to the Varsity but could not take the field as a varsity without foregoing a full year of eligibility. But, and this is where the puny comes in, I do remember having to go against guys like Jim Workman ('61),   Downie ('61) and   Delano ('62) Wray. Then, if I were really lucky, I got run over by Bobby Boyce ('61) or Gerry or Gene ('62) Duncan! So, as an 8th grader, going against the likes of these guys, I was puny!

And, my most vivid memory of that experience, was having Jim and Downie throw dirt in my eyes and then proceed to kick my booty! Guess that was initiation...see if he goes whining to Coach Range or comes back for more. I chose the latter (stupid) but I don't think there was a real choice to be made there!

So you see my dear, puny is relative!

My apologies for getting so wordy here.

Hope all is well with you and your family. My best to all Typhoons everywhere.

---Joe Wingo

Oh, well then, if it's all relative....

And don't apologize for being wordy, Sweetie!  Write as much and as often as you want!  We love to hear from you!

From Evelyn Fryer Fish ('58) of TX - 02/10/06 - "Thank you for being you!!":

Hi Carol!!!

Thank you for your wonderful response on line to my note to you!!!  YOU are very special!!!!

.....    .....

Love, Ev

   WOWZERS!!!  Thanks, Evelyn!

From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 02/10/06 - "Burke Davis":

You mentioned in the newsletter today you had read the JEB Stuart book by Burke Davis.  In the early 80's I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Davis and his wife while giving them handgun instruction.  He was a true gentlemen and we passed many enjoyable hours talking about the War of Northern Aggression.  Mr. Davis will always hold a special place for me.

NO WAY!!!  That is just too cool for words!!!  I am WILDLY impressed!!!  Thanks for telling us, Dave!

From Tim Rogers (Hampton HS - '66) - 02/10/06 - "Dicky Dawes":

Hi Carol,

I keep seeing Dicky Dawes' (NNHS/HHS - '62 - of VA) name come up. I was wondering if he is the same Dicky Dawes I worked with in the mid 70's at Hastings Raydist?

Tim Rogers

How many could there be?!?  I thought Dicky was one of a kind.  But what do I know?  Let's ask him.

   Oh, Dicky......

Thanks, Tim!  It's good to hear from you.    I was beginning to wonder If I had said something to offend all you Krabbas.  You've all been unnaturally quiet.....

Well, that pretty much takes care of it.  The mounds of other notes and letters are still awaiting us (for reasons which may be plainer to y'all when I'm able to include them.  Perhaps tomorrow......

Y'all take care of each other!  TYPHOONS FOREVER!

                          Love to all, Carol
