02/15/06 - Old Style NNHS Newsletter - Server Is Still Down
Sunday night a funny thing happened, but I'm still not laughing. I had a late meeting, and when I returned that night, Dave (Spriggs ('64 - of VA) told me that the site had gone down at 10:00 PM. I thought it would be back up in the morning. It wasn't. Here it is almost 60 hours later, and it's still down - causing me to miss Lincoln's 197th Birthday, and Valentine's Day, and a few other things. ARGHHH!
While we're trying to resolve that, I'll quit being bratty long enough to send an interim old-style Newsletter, by using notes which are not image dependent - or dependent on notes which were image dependent - or dependent on pages within the site itself.
MISSED BIRTHDAYS:
Sunday was Jon Pearl's ('57) birthday, Monday was Carla Fine Cripp's ('65 - of Australia) birthday. There were two Valentine Birthdays - Jimmy Parker ('62) of VA and my niece, Renee Dick Wallace (Booker T. Washington HS - '80) of Northern VA (who was born on Jimmy's 19th Birthday)
A Very Merry Un-Birthday to you all!

Oh - great idea! Call 'em up! No, I hadn't even thought of that. I was just going to wait until they resolved their difficulties. Let's see - where would I find their number? Oh, yeah - it's on their web page - which is down.......
No, wait - I'll try a Google trick!

Sheila Moler
Well, no, Sheila, it didn't get me, not really. It just got us....
Just to make sure (and as I had come across a cool quotation I really wanted to preserve), I tried updating my personal webpage (which I hadn't done in over a year, due to lack of time...):
http://www.angelfire.com/weird2/cluckmeat/
It works just fine, for all the good that does me:
Oh, the quotation? That's it near the top on the right:
"People tend to love me or hate me and a lot of them just think I'm annoying."

From Joe Wingo ('65) of NC, President of the Great NNHS Class of 1965 - 02/10/06:
"Puny" was relative. When you're a J. V. player, the highlight of the year was to be selected to come finish the season with the varsity team as they prepared for Turkey Day and the Crabbers. If you were really blessed, you got to dress out and take the field on Thanksgiving Day as a varsity player. In the 8th grade, I was lucky enough to be brought up to the Varsity but could not take the field as a varsity without foregoing a full year of eligibility. But, and this is where the puny comes in, I do remember having to go against guys like Jim Workman ('61), Downie ('61) and Delano ('62) Wray. Then, if I were really lucky, I got run over by Bobby Boyce ('61) or Gerry or Gene ('62) Duncan! So, as an 8th grader, going against the likes of these guys, I was puny!
And, my most vivid memory of that experience, was having Jim and Downie throw dirt in my eyes and then proceed to kick my booty! Guess that was initiation...see if he goes whining to Coach Range or comes back for more. I chose the latter (stupid) but I don't think there was a real choice to be made there!
So you see my dear, puny is relative!
My
apologies for getting so wordy here.
---Joe Wingo
Oh, well then, if it's all relative....
And
don't apologize for being wordy, Sweetie! Write as much and as often as you
want! We love to hear from you!
From Evelyn Fryer Fish ('58) of TX - 02/10/06 - "Thank you for being you!!":

.....
.....
Love, Ev
WOWZERS!!! Thanks, Evelyn!
From Dave Arnold ('65) of VA - 02/10/06 - "Burke Davis":
You mentioned in the newsletter today you had read the JEB Stuart book by Burke Davis. In the early 80's I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Davis and his wife while giving them handgun instruction. He was a true gentlemen and we passed many enjoyable hours talking about the War of Northern Aggression. Mr. Davis will always hold a special place for me.
NO WAY!!! That is just too cool for words!!!
I am WILDLY impressed!!! Thanks for telling us, Dave!
From Tim Rogers (Hampton HS - '66) - 02/10/06 - "Dicky Dawes":
Hi Carol, I keep seeing Dicky Dawes' (NNHS/HHS - '62 - of VA) name come up. I was wondering if he is the same Dicky Dawes I worked with in the mid 70's at Hastings Raydist? Tim Rogers How many could there be?!? I thought Dicky was one of a kind. But what do I know? Let's ask him. Oh, Dicky...... Thanks, Tim! It's
good to hear from you.

Y'all take care of each other! TYPHOONS FOREVER!
