@ 1950, passed away in Gloucester at the age of 75.

GLOUCESTER - Charles Daniel
Hammack, U. S. Navy, Retired, died on Feb. 10, 2009, following a long illness. Dan, as he liked to be called, was born on May 27, 1933, and was a graduate of Newport News High School. First and foremost, Dan was a patriot. At the age of 17 he joined the Navy serving in the Korean conflict and three tours of duty in Vietnam, Dan had a great love for our country and fought for the freedoms that we so enjoy today becoming our hero and a true Navy man. As a 22-year decorated war veteran, he received many honors, including the National Defense Korean Service Medal (two stars), the United Nations Service Medal, the Navy Good Conduct Medal (5 times), the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal (bronze star), the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation Medal, and the Korean and Vietnam Presidential Unit Service Commendation Medal. |

Following his retirement from the Navy, Dan started as a convenience store clerk for the Tenneco oil company. During his 18 years of increasingly responsible service with the company, Dan retired as an Executive Manager where he was responsible for numerous Tenneco stores from New York to South Carolina. Following his retirement from Tenneco, Dan enjoyed hoisting our flag everyday, fishing and being around his fellow veterans, friends and family. A loving Husband, Father and Grandfather, he is survived by his wife of 49 years, Maria D. Hammack; his daughter, Ersilia Bazzani and husband, Phillip and two grandchildren, Phillip Daniel and Christina Maria. Funeral services conducted by the Reverend Dr. Geoffrey Price, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at Abingdon Episcopal Church. Interment with full military honors will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 5, 2009, at Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Hogg Funeral Home, Gloucester Point. Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to: American Cancer Society c/o Mr. G.
