Hazy Shade of Winter

Sometimes our fate resembles a fruit tree in winter. Who would think that
those branches would turn green again and blossom, but we hope it, we know it.”

 - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
(28 Aug 1749 - 22 Mar 1832)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Here in Fayetteville today we're having an absolutely gorgeous day with a high of 78, but I think it's likely that there's a good chance that wherever else you might be, it feels rather like a winter day today.

BONUS - - Hazy Shade of Winter - Simon and Garfunkel

"A Hazy Shade of Winter" is a song written by Paul Simon, recorded and released by Simon & Garfunkel in 1966, and then included on their 1968 album, Bookends (although it also appeared on their Live from New York City, 1967). It peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100[1] making it the second highest-charting song on the album after "Mrs. Robinson", which reached #1[2] when it was released on the back of its inclusion on the soundtrack of The Graduate.

Critic Richie Unterberer described the song as "one of [Simon and Garfunkel's] best songs, and certainly one of the toughest and more rock-oriented".[3]

The lyrics evoke the passage of the seasons, but (as the title suggests) focusing on the gloominess of winter...

From Ergo Sum - 02/07/17 - "Memorial update info":

On your page you have a Wayne Bostic with birth 29 Aug 1936 ? and death Oct 1969 ? (Class of 1955)

Well, I don't live in Newport News and I don't personally know your classmates, BUT I have a genealogy hobby and I do know that the Wayne with that birth and death dates you have listed is from Idaho (and was never near Newport News, as far as I can tell).

So hopefully that helps a little, but more importantly!! :) While I was doing further research on the Idaho Wayne and his family, someone else popped up:

Wayne M. Bostic
b 01 Oct 1937
d 19 Nov 2003
Burial: Peninsula Memorial Park, Newport News, VA

I couldn't find much else about him, but perhaps he is the Wayne that went to your high school?

Nice website, wonderful memorial with a good way for folks to keep in touch with one another.

Thank you so very much, ES! I truly appreciate your finding this for us! I have amended that sorely neglected page in our Archive with the correct data!

From - 02/07/17:

“Grandpa, do you mind if I play my new harmonica in here?” asked little Phil.

“Of course not, Phil. I love music. In fact, when your grandma and I were young, music saved my life."

“What happened?” asked Phil.

"Well, it was during the famous Johnstown flood. The dam broke and when the water hit our house it knocked it right off the foundation. Grandma got on the dining room table and floated out safely.”

“How about you?”

“Me? Well, I accompanied her on the piano!”

A Hazy Shade of Winter

Written by Paul Simon
(b. 13 Oct 1941)

Recorded by Simon & Garfunkel, 1966

Time, time, time, see what's become of me
While I looked around
For my possibilities
I was so hard to please
But look around, leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

Hear the salvation army band
Down by the riverside, it's bound to be a better ride
Than what you've got planned
Carry your cup in your hand
And look around, leaves are brown now
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

Hang on to your hopes, my friend
That's an easy thing to say, but if your hope should pass away
It's simply pretend
That you can build them again
Look around, the grass is high
The fields are ripe, it's the springtime of my life

Ahhh, seasons change with the scenery
Weaving time in a tapestry
Won't you stop and remember me
At any convenient time
Funny how my memory slips while looking over manuscripts
Of unpublished rhyme
Drinking my vodka and lime

Look around, leaves are brown now
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

Look around, leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground...

Look around, leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground...

Look around, leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground...
