Hazy Shade of Winter

Sometimes our fate resembles a fruit tree in winter. Who would think that
those branches would turn green again and blossom, but we hope it, we know it.”

 - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
(28 Aug 1749 - 22 Mar 1832)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Here in Fayetteville, yesterday was rather horrendous, but today we're having a beautiful day. I think it's likely that there's a good chance that wherever you might be, it feels rather like a winter day today.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Hazy_Shade_of_Winter:

"A Hazy Shade of Winter" is a song written by Paul Simon, recorded and released by Simon & Garfunkel in 1966, and then included on their 1968 album, Bookends (although it also appeared on their Live from New York City, 1967). It peaked at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100[1] making it the second highest-charting song on the album after "Mrs. Robinson", which reached #1[2] when it was released on the back of its inclusion on the soundtrack of The Graduate.

Critic Richie Unterberer described the song as "one of [Simon and Garfunkel's] best songs, and certainly one of the toughest and more rock-oriented".[3]

The lyrics evoke the passage of the seasons, but (as the title suggests) focusing on the gloominess of winter...

    FINALLY:

    From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 02/07/15:

A 20-something year-old girl finally decided to introduce her boyfriend to her parents. She hid him from them because she was afraid of how they'd react because he was very religious, but now that they were engaged she couldn't hide it anymore.

The boy shook the father's hand firmly and sat down for a talk.

"So I understand that you want to marry my daughter. Do you have a job to support her?"

"With God's help, sir, someday soon I'll find a job."

"Are you planning on having children?"

"With God's help, sir, someday, yes."

"I understand that you're a student. How are you going to pay your tuition and afford a baby?"

"With God's help, sir, I'm very certain both of these are possible goals."

The conversation went pleasantly and politely. After the boy left, the mother asked the father, "Well? What do you think of the young lad?"

The father replied, "He seems pretty nice; the only problem is that he seems to believe that I'm God."

    A Hazy Shade of Winter

    Written by Paul Simon
    (b. 13 Oct 1941)

Recorded by Simon & Garfunkel, 1966

Time, time, time, see what's become of me
    While I looked around
    For my possibilities
I was so hard to please
But look around, leaves are brown
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

    Hear the salvation army band
Down by the riverside, it's bound to be a better ride
    Than what you've got planned
Carry your cup in your hand
And look around, leaves are brown now
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

Hang on to your hopes, my friend
That's an easy thing to say, but if your hope should pass away
    It's simply pretend
That you can build them again
Look around, the grass is high
The fields are ripe, it's the springtime of my life

Ahhh, seasons change with the scenery
    Weaving time in a tapestry
Won't you stop and remember me
    At any convenient time
Funny how my memory slips while looking over manuscripts
    Of unpublished rhyme
    Drinking my vodka and lime

Look around, leaves are brown now
And the sky is a hazy shade of winter

    Look around, leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground...

    Look around, leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground...

    Look around, leaves are brown
There's a patch of snow on the ground...
