From Facebook Monday, February 04, 2013 @ 5:15 PM:

From Mona (Carneal) Harrisonposted to ('66) Newport News High School Alumni:
Sarah (Groshong - '61 - of VA) has left us...It so saddens me to send this message...You have no idea. Sarah has been, in just a short time, one of the most wonderful friends, family, parts of my life..... She will be missed by so many. Her struggle has been amazing. Just to think she was to be at our home last week, was sick...thought she could fight it off on her own... Well, some other being had other plans for her and I am a little angry because I will miss her so much. Plans will be forth coming. She loved all of the friends she had made through the Classes of '66 and etc.. We must applaud her friends on the Shore for keeping us abreast of her progress. love to all of you...monaramona (in great sadness I send this message...)

I was absolutely stunned to learn this.  I thought surely Sarah would get well - and in her own way, she did.  Her family and friends have my deepest condolences.

        From Sydney Dearing ('56) of TN - 02/05/13, 1:05 PM - "    Sarah Groshong":

Carol,

I was extremely saddened to hear that Sarah Groshong had passed away. She was my next door neighbor back in the fifties. We lived on Hickory Avenue, directly across the street from Woodrow Wilson School. She was five years younger than I and was (in the class ahead) of my sister        Nancy (Dearing Berry - '62 - of TX).

Two or three years ago, I posted on your website a short piece about her younger brother    Allen ('66) who was a Navy corpsman that died a hero in Vietnam while trying to save the life of a wounded Marine. Sarah contacted me a short time afterwards and thanked me for writing that and we exchanged some memories of growing up in the fifties on Hickory Avenue. Sarah was a marvelous photographer! She had a website http://saragro.com/ devoted to her photography and was kind enough to send me a couple of her photos that I have framed and hanging in my den.

There is a very touching letter from Sarah that was posted on     Norm Covert’s  ('61 - of MD) blog this past Memorial Day about her brother Allen. It brought tears to my eyes. For anyone that would like to read it, go to http://blog.thecovertletter.com/2012/05/memorial-day-allen-eberly-groshong/.

Thank you so much, Sydney, you have my deepest sympathy.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Sarah was definitely one of a kind. She was quick witted, intelligent, and as a school psychologist, wanted the best for students. She will be missed.

Sarah was my good friend at NNHS - It is hard to say good bye, although our paths went separate ways over the years - we staying in touch periodically. I treasure some photographs and letters she sent to me. Her life made a difference. Her memory will be lasting.

RIP Sarah. I will remember you always as a determined soul full of vibrancy and provocative by nature. I first met you at the gym and admired your "let's get to it" attitude. I'm going to miss your sweet smile and genuine kindness. Prayers to your family and friends, Jerry Murphy

Sarah...I am thinking about our laughter, smiles, and banter together. You always brought a feisty energy to our conversations. The photo below reminds me of how our humor blended together in such an easy way. Your appreciation for the arts and of course the Dems were always appreciated. Sending thoughts and love to your family. I miss you. Love, Damian
