J. E. B. Stuart's 180th Birthday

He was superbly mounted and his side arms gleamed in the morning sun like burnished silver.  A long black ostrich plume
waved gracefully from a black slouch hat cocked up on one side, held with a golden clasp.....  He is the prettiest and most
graceful rider I ever saw.  I could not help but notice with what natural ease and comely elegance he sat his steed as it
bounded over the field..... He and his horse appeared to be one and the same machine.

- George Neese of Maj. Gen. James Ewell Brown Stuart, C. S. A.
(06 Feb 1833 - 12 May 1864), June 1863

From Sandra Ray ('61) of VA - 02/05/13 - "Looking for someone.....":

Good Morning, Carol,

I might not comment on your site, but I surely check it out everyday. You are amazing doing all the work you do to keep this site up. We all appreciate it and love you for it.

I had a close friend ask me if I could find out if someone on the site might know a former Newport News Classmate. Don't think either of them graduated, not sure.

Peggey "Edwards" Lewis......late 50's
James Edwards....Brother....not sure of year at all

Any help would be greatly appreciated, but since I don't have enough information and you aren't able to, that isn't a problem. Just thought I would check with you first.

Thanking you in advance,

Sandra Ray '61

Hi, Sandra - good to hear from you! I hope someone out there will be of more help than I, but I've remembered and found one lead for you.

There was a   Jimmy Edwards in the Class of 1962; I'm relatively certain he graduated.  He was a Stuart Gardens kid.  If he's the same Jimmy Edwards, he could more than likely connect you with his sister.  In 1997 he was living in Yorktown, but    Brenda Amos Williams ('62) of VA could supply you with more recent contact information than that:  Brenda <>

I checked the junior and senior sections of all the yearbooks between 1954 and 1960.  The problem in finding Peggy is that individual portraits of sophomores and younger did not begin until the 1960 Anchor.  Prior to this, the students were shown in group photos with their homeroom - and only their last names and the initials of their first name given (and they were sometime incorrect).  Indexing would have been a tremendous help here, but it did not begin until the 1961 Anchor, and the 1964 and 1967 Anchors did not include one.

Beyond that, it's time to turn it over to our schoolmates.

   "Anyone? Anyone?"

        From Sydney Dearing ('56) of TN - 02/05/13, 1:05 PM - "    Sarah Groshong":

I was extremely saddened to hear that Sarah Groshong had passed away. She was my next door neighbor back in the fifties. We lived on Hickory Avenue, directly across the street from Woodrow Wilson School. She was five years younger than I and was (in the class ahead) of my sister        Nancy (Dearing Berry - '62 - of TX).
Two or three years ago, I posted on your website a short piece about her younger brother    Allen ('66) who was a Navy corpsman that died a hero in Vietnam while trying to save the life of a wounded Marine. Sarah contacted me a short time afterwards and thanked me for writing that and we exchanged some memories of growing up in the fifties on Hickory Avenue. Sarah was a marvelous photographer! She had a website devoted to her photography and was kind enough to send me a couple of her photos that I have framed and hanging in my den.
There is a very touching letter from Sarah that was posted on     Norm Covert’s  ('61 - of MD) blog this past Memorial Day about her brother Allen. It brought tears to my eyes. For anyone that would like to read it, go to
Thank you so much, Sydney, you have my deepest sympathy.

       From Dave Spriggs ('64) of VA - 02/05/13, 11:27 PM - "  Tommy Ware":

Tommy Ware (June 1943) is my first cousin once removed. His mother (Ida Evans Ware) and my grandmother (Maggie Evans Linkous) were sisters.

Oh, David, I'm so sorry!  You have my condolences on the loss of your cousin.
