From Glenn Dye ('60) of TX - 02/05/10 - "  The Missing Lady":

A few weeks ago there was a report of a lady that was missing from Hampton, VA. I can't remember her name. Do you know if there is any more news about her?

Yes, Glenn, that would be Karen Belding. The end of the story - or probably as much as we'll ever know - is posted at the bottom of the Original Newsletter:

   Thanks for your concern, Glenn!

    From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 02/05/10 - "USS Boxer (LPH-4)":

Hi Carol:
Thank you for publishing the exchange of messages between
Captain Dave (Spriggs - '64 - of VA) and me regarding the hull number of the USS Boxer, after she was converted from an Anti-Submarine Carrier to a Landing Platform Helicopter, which was prompted by the (note from) your subscriber,   Jim Cobb ('66) of VA who served in this ship during his tour in the U.S. Navy.

Never wanting to miss an opportunity to banter with Captain Dave, my message put him in the loop, and he did not disappoint us in the least.

My only hesitation in raising the issue was for fear of possibly embarrassing Jim Cobb, but who has not made a keying error using a computer???

I "Phat Phinger" a message almost daily!!!

The Final Chapter on the USS Boxer is that she was sold for scrap and broken up in New Jersey.

Of course, we now have a USS Boxer (LHD-4) serving in the Fleet.

TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL
Thanks, Adonis! We always strive for accuracy here, but whenever I'm involved it generally seems to take a rather circuitous route!

From Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA - 02/05/10 - "LPH":

I would like to add my memories about the LPH ships (Amphibious Assault Ship-Helicopter). Back in the OLD NAVY I was a Radioman, in a Tactical Air Control Squadron (TACRON 12). The 1st LPH I served on was the USS Princton LPH 5, and next was the USS Iwo Jima LPH 2. We inserted Advisers into South Vietnam in 1963/64. The Iwo Jima was built as an LPH from the keel up. The Princeton started out the CVS 37 during the finial stages of WW ll. She served many rolls in her life of service to the Nation. In late 1962 she was still fast enough that in a high speed turn we could walk on the bulkhead (The walls, to you land lubbers). Seeing references to the LPH's stirred some old memories - most of which were good. I had the pleasure of touring the Iwo Jima in Norfolk with my wife shortly before she was decommissioned. Man, you talk about memories!!!

Thanks for allowing an OLD salt to reminisce just a little bit. I could sit and talk about these two for hours.
Jerry Blanchard (Class of 62) of Va.
   Certainly, Jerry - that's why we're here!

From Jerry Blanchard ('62) of VA - 02/05/10 - "NNHS - An Old Student":

I have attached a picture of one of our very earliest class members. I have known this gentleman for 30 years (or more), but did not know he graduated from NNHS until last week. He is 98 years old. His family does not know the exact year, but it has to be between 1928 and 1930. He spent one year on a merchant ship when he was 15, so the family says. His memory is not the best at this time. Some things he talks about, the family can verify. I visit him every chance I get to try to learn more of Newport News in those bygone days.

From ArcaMax Jokes - 02/05/10:

License Plate

While driving with my daughter and her husband, I noticed that the woman in the car ahead of us had a rather odd vanity plate.

"That's weird," I said, pointing to it. "Why would anyone want to boast about mold on their car?"

"Call me crazy," said my son-in-law after deciphering the phrase, "but I believe that reads 'FUN-GAL.'"
