Could I Have This Dance?

“Please send me your last pair of shoes, worn out with dancing
as you mentioned in your letter, so that I might have something
to press against my heart.”

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

THIS DAY IN THE WAR BETWEEN THE STATES:

http://www.civilwarinteractive.com/This%20Day/thisday0205.htm - ALSO:

February 05, 1861 - Fort Sumter was again the subject of attention as the President summarily dismissed any notions held by South Carolina that the United States would give up its jurisdiction over the fort. Meanwhile, the Peace Convention attempted to arrange a settlement of differences between the secessionists and those who wished to uphold the union.  Speaking to the delegates, John Tyler indicated that, "the eyes of the whole country are turned to this assembly, in expectation and hope."

February 05, 1863 - Queen Victoria made an official statement concerning Great Britain's refusal to enter into mediation attempts between the Union and the Confederacy at this time. The reasons given included the observation that such matter cannot be "attended with a probability of success."

February 05, 1864 - Moving steadily toward Meridian, Mississippi, Sherman's men marched into Jackson; minor skirmishes occurred along the route to Jackson and at Clinton.

February 05, 1865 - President Lincoln presented a plan to his Cabinet pledging the Federal government to pay $400,000,000.00 to the slave states if they laid down their arms before April 1. The Cabinet, though, was opposed to the scheme and the matter was dropped.

From Phil Hammond ('64) of UT - 02/04/11 - "World Championships":

Don’t y'all forget to watch the World Championships this weekend from Deer Valley Resort and Park City Resort.  If you remember last year we hosted the World Cup.  This year it’s a lot more with all the winners of the world cup from all over the world competing for Gold, Silver and Bronze metals.  You will especially enjoy the 4 man/women skier cross race.  I watched the finals today and was amazed at their speed and air.  Tonight will be the aerial finals and tomorrow night will be the dual mogul finals.  I will be there Saturday night for the finals and then work all night on the load out.

Pictures to follow.

Phil

   WOWZERS! Thanks, Phil!

From Glenn Dye ('60) of TX - 02/04/11 - "GROWING OLDER":

Have a GREAT day!

T
ODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN, YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE,
SO ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS.

It's Not What You Gather, But What You Scatter That Tells What Kind Of Life You Have Lived.

Thank you so much, Glenn! That's always good to remember!

From Wayne Stokes ('65) of VA - 02/04/11 - "4 Years Old and Rocking the House!":

This kid is amazing!!!

He's just too good!   Watch his foot on the "bass drum". Watch his expressions.  Towards the end of the song, he spots his parents in the audience.  The looks on his face is priceless.  And only 4 years old!!  He certainly has rhythm.  To start the show, you will need to click on the picture.

From Ruth Ann Reece Horace ('67) of FL - 02/04/11 - "ALERTS TO TERROR THREATS":

ALERTS TO TERROR THREATS IN 2011 EUROPE

By John Cleese

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist threats and have therefore raised their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross."

The English have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940 when tea supplies nearly ran out.

Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in 1588, when threatened by the Spanish Armada.

The Scots have raised their threat level from "P___ed Off" to "Let's get the Bastards." They don't have any other levels. This is the reason they have been used on the front line of the British army for the last 300 years.

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France 's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans have increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose."

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual; the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

Australia, meanwhile, has raised its security level from "No worries" to "She'll be alright, Mate." Two more escalation levels remain: "Crikey! I think we'll need to cancel the barbie this weekend!" and "The barbie is canceled." So far no situation has ever warranted use of the final escalation level.

     Thanks, Ruthie!

FINALLY:

From Will and Guy's Joke of the Day - 02/04/11:

* Naughty Bears

In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Montana Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field.

We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear. It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity.  Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear poop.

Black bear poop is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear poop is larger and has little bells in it and smells like pepper.

==================================================================

* I'm Gonna be a Bear.

In this life I'm a woman. In my next life, I'd like to come back as a bear. When you're a bear, you get to hibernate. You do nothing but sleep for six months. I could deal with that.

Before you hibernate, you're supposed to eat yourself stupid. I could deal with that too.

When you're a girl bear, you birth your children (who are the size of walnuts) while you are sleeping and wake to partially grown, cute, cuddly cubs. I could definitely deal with that.

If you're a mama bear, everyone knows you mean business. You swat anyone who bothers your cubs. If your cubs get out of line, you swat them too. I could deal with that.

If you're a bear, your mate EXPECTS you to wake up growling. He EXPECTS that you will have hairy legs and excess body fat.

Yup, I'm gonna be a bear!

Could I Have This Dance

Words and Music by Wayland Holyfield (b. 15 Mar 1942) and Bob House

Recorded by Anne Murray (b. 20 June 1945), 1980

I'll always remember the song they were playing
The first time we danced and I knew
As we swayed to the music and held to each other
I fell in love with you

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance For the rest of my life?

I'll always remember that magic moment
When I held you close to me
As we moved together I knew forever
You're all I'll ever need

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance For the rest of my life?

Could I have this dance for the rest of my life?
Would you be my partner every night?
When we're together it feels so right
Could I have this dance For the rest of my life?
