Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup

If I love you, what business is it of yours?”

 - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
(28 Aug 1749 – 22 Mar 1832)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I simply adore this great old classic. I'm unable to find a nice, mellow midi file that I like - not really - so just try the bonus video to hear Nat's beautiful voice.

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNzxH3zRU_I - Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup - Nat King Cole, 1954

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darling,_Je_Vous_Aime_Beaucoup:

"Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" is a popular song with words and music by Anna Sosenko in 1935.

It was introduced in the film Love and Hisses by Hildegarde and charted by Hildegarde at # 21 in 1943.

The best-selling version of the song was recorded by Nat King Cole in 1954 which reached a peak Billboard position # 7 in 1955.

Deep River Boys with orchestra recorded the song in Oslo on August 24, 1956. It was released on the extended play Hello young lovers (HMV 7EGN 12). The stranger on the balcony in Bob Dylan's and Jacques Levy's song "Black Diamond Bay" from the 1976 album "Desire" says “My darling, je vous aime beaucoup” to the female character.

The deliberately bad French in the title (and used as a refrain along with "Wish my French were good enough") means "Darling, I love you a lot."

Although "Je vous aime" is grammatically correct, "I love you" in French is generally said "Je t'aime," incorporating the familiar address "te" rather than the formal (or polite) address "vous."

"Je ne sais pas" in the song means "I don't know." "Compris" (or "compree" as it is sometimes phonetically spelled in printed lyrics) means "understood." "Toujours" means "always." "Chérie" means "dear." "Très très fort" means "very very strong."

From Mike Lindsay (Menchville HS - '83) of Northern VA - 02/03/16 - "NNHS65 Website is Awesome":

Dear Ms. Harty:

I wanted to let you know how much I enjoy the NNHS65 website. Please accept my sincere thanks for all the work and effort you put into it.

In the interest of full disclosure, I’m not an NNHS alumni. In fact I graduated from Menchville in 1983 but I definitely love the look back at a bygone (and mostly better) era in Newport News. My dad, Dennis Lindsay, graduated from York in 1958 but knew many NNHS folks. I enjoy seeing familiar names and faces of his friends that I recall from my youth. A lot of folks may recall my dad from his decades-long involvement in youth sports including Deer Park Little League. He would have loved your website.

My parents, both of whom unfortunately have passed away, lived in Denbigh for years before decamping from the mayhem of Newport News for Gloucester in 2000.

I will send you a donation this week to help fund this very worthwhile endeavor.

Feel free to share this on the website.

Warm regards,

Mike

WOWZERONI! Thank you so very much, Mike! Your note really made my day! At your suggestion, I posted it on the Site Map itself:

Thank you for all you do.

Thank you, J - for everything!

From Judy Phillips Allen ('66) of VA - 02/02/16 - "Staying Young":

Stay Young, My Friend

We all need to read this one over and over until it becomes part of who we are!

HOW TO STAY YOUNG

1. Try everything twice.  On one woman's tombstone she said she wanted this epitaph:
Tried everything twice...loved it both times!

2. Keep only cheerful friends.   The grouches pull you down.  ( Keep this in mind if you are one of those grouches.)

3. Keep learning: Learn more about the computer, crafts, gardening, whatever.
Never let the brain get idle.'  An idle mind is the devil's workshop.'
And the devil's name is Alzheimer's!

4. Enjoy the simple things.

5. Laugh often, long and loud. Laugh until you gasp for breath.
And if you have a friend who makes you laugh, spend lots and lots of time with HIM/HER.

6. The tears happen: Endure, grieve, and move on. The only person who is
with us our entire life, is ourselves. LIVE while you are alive.

7. Surround yourself with what you love: Whether it's family, pets,
keepsakes, music, plants, hobbies, whatever. Your home is your refuge.

8. Cherish your health: If it is good, preserve it.
If it is unstable, improve it. If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don't take guilt trips. Take a trip to the mall, or a trip to the next county or a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.  I love you, my special friend.

11. Forgive now those who made you cry. You might not get a second chance.

Remember! Lost time can never be found.

Be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

   Thank you, Dearest Judy!

  From Wayne Agee ('58) of FL - 02/03/16 - "Vitamin F":

A beautiful message...... with so much truth!

Why do I have a variety of friends who are all so different in character? How is it possible that I can get along with them all?

I think that each one helps to bring out a "different" part of me. With one of them I am polite. With another I joke, with another I can be a bit naughty... I can sit down and talk about serious matters with one. With another I laugh a lot. I listen to one friend's problems. Then I listen to another one's advice for me.

My friends are like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. When completed, they form a treasure box. A treasure of friends! They are my friends who understand me better than I understand myself. They're friends who support me through good days and bad. Real Age doctors tell us that friends are good for our health.

Dr. Oz calls them Vitamin F (for Friends) and counts the benefits of friends as essential to our well being. Research shows that people in strong social circles have less risk of depression and terminal strokes.

If you enjoy Vitamin F constantly you can be up to 30 years younger than your real age. The warmth of friendship stops stress and even in your most intense moments, it decreases the chance of a cardiac arrest or stroke by 50%. I'm so happy that I have a stock of Vitamin F!

In summary, we should value our friends and keep in touch with them. We should try to see the funny side of things and laugh together and pray for each other in the tough moments.

Some of my friends are friends online. I know I am part of theirs because their names appear on my computer screen often and I feel blessed that they care as much for me as I care for them.

Thank you for being one of my Vitamins!

The most beautiful thing about friendship is that we can grow separately without growing apart.

Have an awesome day!

  Thanks so much, Wayne!

Darling, je vous aime beaucoup
Je ne sais pas what to do
You know you've completely
Stolen my heart

Morning, noon and night-time too
Toujours, wondering what to do
That's the way I've felt
Right from the start

Ah, Cheri!
My love for you is très, très fort
Wish my French were good enough
I'd tell you so much more

But I hope that you compris
All the things you mean to me
Darling, je vous aime beaucoup
I love you, yes I do

Wish my French were good enough
I'd tell you so much more

But I hope that you compris
All the things you mean to me
Darling, je vous aime beaucoup
I love you, yes I do

(Darling, je vous aime beaucoup)
I love you, yes I do
