Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup

If I love you, what business is it of yours?”

 - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
(28 Aug 1749 – 22 Mar 1832)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

I simply adore this great old classic.  Unfortunately I'm unable to find a nice, mellow midi file that I like - not really - so just try the bonus video to hear Nat's beautiful voice:

BONUS - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNzxH3zRU_I - Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup - Nat King Cole, 1954

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darling,_Je_Vous_Aime_Beaucoup:

"Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" is a popular song with words and music by Anna Sosenko in 1935.

It was introduced in the film Love and Hisses by Hildegarde and charted by Hildegarde at # 21 in 1943.

The best-selling version of the song was recorded by Nat King Cole in 1954 which reached a peak Billboard position # 7 in 1955.

Deep River Boys with orchestra recorded the song in Oslo on August 24, 1956. It was released on the extended play Hello young lovers (HMV 7EGN 12). The stranger on the balcony in Bob Dylan's and Jacques Levy's song "Black Diamond Bay" from the 1976 album "Desire" says “My darling, je vous aime beaucoup” to the female character.

The deliberately bad French in the title (and used as a refrain along with "Wish my French were good enough") means "Darling, I love you a lot."

Although "Je vous aime" is grammatically correct, "I love you" in French is generally said "Je t'aime," incorporating the familiar address "te" rather than the formal (or polite) address "vous."

"Je ne sais pas" in the song means "I don't know." "Compris" (or "compree" as it is sometimes phonetically spelled in printed lyrics) means "understood." "Toujours" means "always." "Chérie" means "dear." "Très très fort" means "very very strong."

THIS DAY IN WWII:

February 04, 1941 - The United Service Organization (USO) was created to entertain American troops.

February 04, 1942A baby was born at sea onboard the USS WEST POINT (ex-SS AMERICA, NNS Hull #369) to a couple amongst over 2,000 British civilians rescued from Singapore just days before it fell to the enemy. In appreciation, the baby boy was named Westpoint Leslie Sheldrake. To this day, he remains in contact with members of the ship's crew that rescued his parents, plus his own two grandsons also have 'Westpoint' as their middle names. (Thanks, Bill Lee! )

February 04, 1945 - The Yalta Conference began as U.S. President Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, and Soviet leader Josef Stalin set about to outline plans for Germany's defeat.

February 04, 1945 - The British Indian Army and Imperial Japanese Army began a series of battles known as the Battle of Pokoku and Irrawaddy River operations.

February 04, 2004 - A Japanese movie distributor canceled plans to display a watercolor by Adolf Hitler. The work was planned to be shown to promote a film, 2002's "Max", that was loosely based on the Nazi dictator's life. The distributor said that the painting could not be shipped in time for the movie's opening.

THIS DAY IN 1964:

Tuesday, February 04, 1964 - Nothing happened anywhere. Absolutely nothing...

From John Patterson ('59) of TN - 02/03/14 - "Flash Mob In Moscow":

Who would have thought that young people in Moscow would put on a "flash mob" happening, dancing to an 83-year-old American song, written by a Russian born American Jew (Irving Berlin)? Turn your sound ON, and crank it up!

I have a feeling that Stalin and Khrushchev are turning over in their graves!

Recorded by
Nat King Cole, 1954 - # 7 on the charts in 1955

Darling, je vous aime beaucoup
Je ne sais pas what to do
You know you've completely
Stolen my heart

Morning, noon and night-time too
Toujours, wondering what to do
That's the way I've felt
Right from the start

Ah, Cheri!
My love for you is très, très fort
Wish my French were good enough
I'd tell you so much more

But I hope that you compris
All the things you mean to me
Darling, je vous aime beaucoup
I love you, yes I do

Wish my French were good enough
I'd tell you so much more

But I hope that you compris
All the things you mean to me
Darling, je vous aime beaucoup
I love you, yes I do

(Darling, je vous aime beaucoup)
I love you, yes I do
