From Jim Cobb ('66) of VA - 02/01/10 - "NNHS Mailing List":

I must not have proof read my submittal to you very well – The ship I served on was the USS Boxer (LPH-4) not LPH-3.  Additional information – This was a world war 2 carrier with a wooden flight deck that was converted to a helicopter carrier during the 50’s.  It has long since been “de-commissioned” and mothballed.  Our primary mission was picking marines in in Gitmo, Cuba and carrying them to Panama for jungle training in preparation for their tour in Viet Nam.  Sorry for the error.

Jim Cobb

Thanks so much, Jim! I've amended that now:

  From Domi O'Brien ('64) of NH - 02/01/10 - "unsafe sites":

I'd just like you to know that lately whenever I go to WMUR is our local TV station which serves southern NH-- to get the weather report, I get a stern warning that it may be an unsafe site-- the same warning I get when going to your newsletter site.
I think the security alerts have gotten out of hand.

NNHS '64

AHA! And see, that's just ridiculous! Thanks so much for sharing that lovely tidbit with us, Domi!

From Steve Hochman ('60) of VA - 02/01/10 - "just checking":

I have not heard anything from nnhs 65 in a few days, so  I am just checking on you to be sure everything is OK!

You have been the person that keeps us all together and informed.  We all appreciate all you do for us!

Sincerely,  Steve Hochman

Thanks for checking, Steve; I really appreciate your concern! I've been seriously in a blur and a fog all week, and am trying to catch up now.....

From Domi O'Brien ('64) of NH  - 02/01/10 - "Hymn to Brighidh, on her feast day":

Elizabeth Lankes (Hampton HS - '71) of VA - 02/01/10, 4:45 PM - "RE: With Sincerest Condolences":

Dear Carol,
Thank you so much for honoring our Dad's memory with your Memorial page. It's kind words and deeds like yours that give us comfort at a sad time like this.
Elizabeth and Jean Lankes

It was my honor, Betty and Jeanie - and again, you have my deepest sympathy.

       From Henry Hoyle ('65) of Northern VA - 02/01/10 - "Swinging_J_J_Lankes":

In your note about the passing of
John M. 'Bud' Lankes, it mentioned that his father was Julius J. Lankes.  I assume that he is the same as the Virginia artist, J. J. Lankes.
My parents framed a set of his woodcuts, and had them displayed on our living room wall.

I have a number of them.  I scanned "Swinging", which is from "Virginia Woodcuts", Copyright by J. J. Lankes, 1930. Published by The Virginia Press, Inc., Newport News, Va.

WOWZERONI! See how linked and intertwined we all are! Thanks so much for sharing this with us, Cousin Henry!

From Linda May Bond Crayton ('66) of VA - 02/01/10 - "know your snow.":

Well Carol,

I am sure you have seen on the news that we got snow! It has caused everything and everyone in this area to come to a completestop. Schools, trash pick up and dog walkers. All stopped. I can remember as a child it snowing so deep we had snowman building contests.  Some reached to the second floor of the houses! Of course those had a car under them to add 'balance'. Some were colored with food coloring to add to the fun. And others had a whole family of snow people with dog ! I know that Riley and I even used a piece of cardboard as a sled that was pulled behind a friend's car on streets such as these.
But that was then and this is now. Now these six inches of snow has, I'm sure, made us the biggest joke in America. SIX INCHES. Talking about fleecing America.......

Linda May '66

Sorry I've been indoors for four days; hip replacement is beyond my budget.

I hear that! Thanks, Linda May!

From Terry Haney ('66) of VA - 01/29/10 - "A Few More Things I Thought You Might Have A Place For (#3 in a Series)":

I've attached some more items which you can use on your website if you have a place for them.

There's a great place for these last three gems, too, Terry - on one of the very oldest sections of the website: the Odds and Ends page:

Thanks so very much for sharing all this wonderful memorabilia with us, Terry!

From Edna Whitcomb Harrison ('65) of VA - 02/01/10 - "reunion":

Good to see that the Class of 1965 will be having a reunion. The dates at the bottom of the newsletters are wrong, though.

It sure would be nice to see you and Paul in October.

Edna Whitcomb Harrison

YIKESARONI! I was interrupted right smack in the middle of posting that. When I returned, I thought something looked a little askew somehow..... I've amended that now.

   Thanks so much, Edna!
Ja, it would be nice! In reality, though, I have about as much chance of attending that reunion as I do of flying to the moon on my broomstick.

   Speaking of which.....

From My Friend, Tina, of NC - 01/30/10 - "Women":

Women are Angels and when someone breaks our wings off, we simply continue to fly................. on a broomstick.
We are flexible.
WILD GIGGLES!!! Thanks, Tina!

From ArcaMax Jokes - 02/01/10:

Broken Engagement

Dear Marty,

I have been unable to sleep since I broke off your engagement to my daughter. Will you forgive and forget?

I was much too sensitive about your Mohawk, tattoo and pierced nose. I now realize motorcycles aren't really that dangerous, and I really should not have reacted that way to the fact that you have never held a job.

I am also very sure that some other very nice people live under the bridge in the park, too. Sure my daughter is only 18 and wants to marry you instead of going to Harvard on full scholarship. After all, you can't learn everything about life from books.

I sometimes forget how backward I can be. I was wrong. I was a fool. I have now come to my senses and you have my full blessing to marry my daughter.

Sincerely, Your future father-in-law.

P.S. Congratulations on winning the lottery!

Church Etiquette

A Sunday school teacher asked her little children, as they were on the way to church service, "And why is it necessary to be quiet in church?"

One bright little girl replied, "Because people are sleeping."

Standing in the Shadows of Love

Recorded by The Four Tops

Standing in the shadows of love
Waitin' for the heartaches to come
Can't you see me standing in the shadows of love
I'm getting ready for the heartaches to come
I'd run but there's no where to go
'Cause heartaches will follow me I know
Without your love, the love I need
It's the beginning of the end for me
'Cause you've taken away all me reasons for livin'
When you pushed aside all the love I've been giving
Now wait a minute
Didn't I teach you right, didn't I?
Didn't I do the best I could, didn't I?
So don't you leave me standin' in the shadow of love
I'm gettin' ready for the heartaches to come
Don't you see me standing in the shadow of love
Just tryin' my best to get ready for the heartaches to come

All alone I'll desperately be
With misery my only company
Come today, in fact come tomorrow
Sorrow, I ain't got nothin' but sorrow
Don't your conscience bother you
How can you watch me cry after all I've done for you
Now hold a minute
Gave you all the love I had, didn't I?
When you needed me I was there, now wasn't I?
(Standing in the shadows of love
Gettin' ready for the heartaches to come)
I've tried not to cry out loud
No gal you ain't gonna help me now
What did I do to cause all this grief
Now what'd I say to make you want to leave
Now wait a minute
I gave my heart and soul to you, didn't I?
Now didn't I always treat you good, didn't I?
I'm Standing in the shadows of love
I'm gettin' ready for the heartaches to come
Hope to see you standing in the shadows of love
Tryin' my best to get ready for the heartaches to come
