Bonnie Blue Flag

I think if we are realistic, the South - the old Confederate states - really only has one entirely unique feature
that other parts of the country don't have, and that is this nearly 400-year history of tremendous intimacy,
in every sense of the word, good and evil, between two very different kinds of peoples: people who were
brought here against their wishes from Africa and a largely Anglo-white population.”

- Reynolds Price
(01 Feb 1933 - 20 Jan 2011)

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

This song was suggested by         my husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) several of years ago; I thought it fitting that it should fall here between Lee and Jackson's birthdays.  Thanks again, Paul!

It struck me as rather interesting that the author of the most appropriate quotation died five years ago today at the age of 77:

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bonnie_Blue_Flag:

... On January 26, 1861, Mississippi officially adopted a new flag, which included the Bonnie Blue Flag in its canton and a magnolia tree in its center field (known as the Magnolia Flag). This flag remained in use until 1894. An Ulster immigrant named Harry McCarthy was present, and later wrote The Bonnie Blue Flag ("bonnie" being a Scottish word meaning "beautiful") which became a popular marching song, and led to the flag being used as an unofficial flag of the Confederate States of America during the Civil War. Typically, the refrain is:[2][3]
Hurrah! Hurrah!
For Southern Rights, Hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag
That bears a Single Star![2][3]

The Bonnie Blue Flag holds special significance to the Texas brigade...

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bonnie_Blue_Flag:

"The Bonnie Blue Flag", also known as "We Are a Band of Brothers", is an 1861 marching song associated with the Confederate States of America. The words were written by Irish born entertainer Harry McCarthy, with the melody taken from the song "The Irish Jaunting Car". The song's title refers to the unofficial first Flag of the Confederacy, the "Bonnie Blue Flag, the symbol of secession from the Union, that bears the "single star" of the chorus.

"The Bonnie Blue Flag" holds special significance to the Texas brigade. The song was premiered by lyricist Harry McCarthy during a concert in Jackson, Mississippi, in the spring of 1861 and performed again in September of that same year at the New Orleans Academy of Music for the First Texas Volunteer Infantry regiment mustering in celebration.[citation needed]

The New Orleans music publishing house of A.E. Blackmar issued six editions of "The Bonnie Blue Flag" between 1861 and 1864 along with three additional arrangements. The "Band of Brothers" mentioned in the first line of the song is a reference to the St. Crispin's day speech in William Shakespeare's play Henry V...

HEALTH UPDATES:

1.   From Elizabeth Tedder Nunnally ('65 / '68) of VA - 01/19/16:

My blood level did not drop in 24 hours so the doctors let me come home late today. Just getting dressed, coming home, and taking a shower wore me out and I had to take a nap. Still do not think I will have trouble going back to sleep tonight! Hospital beds are not comfortable, the place is noisy, and the nurses wake you up every hour to check something! My arms, hands and neck are black and blue and with all the blood I have had, my grandson says "My Nina is a vampire". At least I am home and will sleep in my own bed tonight with Milton and our two dogs! Thanks so very much for all the prayers. It is wonderful to know that I have so many wonderful friends.

EXCELLENT! Thank you, Elizabeth! We'll keep praying for you.

2.  From Shirley Caudill Williamson ('65) of VA - 01/19/16:

Another update on my grandson's wife, Ashley. She went back into surgery this afternoon to have stints put in both kidneys for the stones and she got another pint of blood because she is bleeding internally again. I will let y'all know something else when DJ lets me know. Keep those prayers coming .

YIKES! Thank you, Shirley! We'll keep Ashley and your whole family in our prayers as well.

FINALLY:
From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 01/19/16:

A man went to a pet shop looking to buy a parrot. The shop had several parrots but one was priced much lower than the others. When the man asked why one was so much cheaper than the others, the pet shop owner assured the man that he did not want the cheaper one because it had a very foul mouth.

"I've tried everything, but I can't get him to stop cussing", he explained.

Eager to save some money, the man bought the parrot, sure he could teach the bird not to cuss. He too tried everything to stop the parrot's foul mouth.

Finally, in frustration, he put the bird in the freezer to cool off. After a few minutes, he opened the freezer to find the parrot with a totally changed attitude.

"Please, I'll NEVER cuss again! Please let me out! By the way, what did the chicken do?"

The Bonnie Blue Flag

Lyrics by
Harry McCarthy (1804-1874), 1861

Music - old Irish tune, The Irish Jaunting Car

We are a band of brothers and native to the soil
Fighting for our Liberty, With treasure, blood and toil
And when our rights were threatened, the cry rose near and far
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star!

Hurrah!
Hurrah!
For Southern rights, hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

As long as the Union was faithful to her trust
Like friends and brethren, kind were we, and just
But now, when Northern treachery attempts our rights to mar
We hoist on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Hurrah!
Hurrah!
For Southern rights, hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

First gallant South Carolina nobly made the stand
Then came Alabama and took her by the hand
Next, quickly Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida
All raised on high the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Hurrah!
Hurrah!
For Southern rights, hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Ye men of valor gather round the banner of the right
Texas and fair Louisiana join us in the fight
Davis, our loved President, and Stephens statesmen are
Now rally round the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Hurrah!
Hurrah!
For Southern rights, hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

And here's to brave Virginia, the Old Dominion State.
With the young Confederacy at length has linked her fate.
Impelled by her example, now other States prepare
To hoist on high the Bonnie Blue flag that bears a single star.

Hurrah!
Hurrah!
For Southern rights, hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Then here's to our Confederacy, strong we are and brave,
Like patriots of old we'll fight, our heritage to save.
And rather than submit to shame, to die we would prefer
So cheer for the Bonnie Blue flag that bears a single star.

Hurrah!
Hurrah!
For Southern rights, hurrah!
Hurrah for the Bonnie Blue Flag that bears a single star.

Then cheer, boys, cheer, raise a joyous shout
For Arkansas and North Carolina now have both gone out;
And let another rousing cheer for Tennessee be given
The single star of the Bonnie Blue Flag has grown to be eleven!
