   We have another sad edition of the NNHS Newsletter today.  James Goodwin, Class of February 1946, passed away in Newport News on Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the age of 79.

James P. Goodwin, Jr.
 
    NEWPORT NEWS - James P. Goodwin Jr., 79, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2009, after a valiant battle with blood cancer.

A native and lifelong resident of Newport News, Mr. Goodwin graduated from Newport News High School and attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Following a short stint in the Virginia National Guard, Mr. Goodwin joined the Navy and earned his navy wings of gold from the United States Navy in 1952. Following his active duty tour he served in the Naval Reserve Program at Norfolk Naval Air Station for 20 years.

A well respected business man in Newport News, Mr. Goodwin was President and owner of Goodpar Ice Cream Company, until he sold the company in 1972. He then became a charter pilot for RAM Aviation and Flight International. An avid pilot and sailor, Mr. Goodwin was a founding member of the Warwick Yacht and Country Club, and a former member of the Warwick Rotary Club, The Hampton Roads Assembly, and the Tidewater Soaring Society.

Mr. Goodwin was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jean Williams Goodwin; and his parents, James P. Goodwin Sr. and Jane Fulmer Cowling Goodwin.

He is survived by his sister, Jane Goodwin Newell and her husband, Charles Newell; two daughters, Margaret Jean Goodwin Stickles and Lynn Cowling Goodwin Hudson and her husband, Ralph of Annapolis, Md.; two grandsons, Donald Lee Stickles Jr. and Kevin Bradford Stickles and his wife, Nina; one granddaughter, Jodi Anne Hudson; and his great-granddaughter, Katelynn Jean Marie Stickles.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at Chestnut Memorial United Methodist Church, 1024 Harpersville Road, Newport News, VA, 23601, phone: 757-595-6531. The family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall following the memorial service.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Chestnut Memorial or Riverside Hospice.
