NEWPORT NEWS - Leonard Aaron, born Oct. 27, 1923, in Newport News, went to be with God on Friday, Jan. 13, 2012. He was liked, loved, and respected.

He was a graduate of Newport News High School, attended Virginia Tech and graduated from the College of William and Mary. As a child, he worked with his father, Harry Aaron, owner and founder of the La Vogue Shoppe.

Leonard was an active member and past president of Rodef Sholom Temple. In his later years, participation in weekly minion services was a great comfort to him. At the age of 63, Leonard reaffirmed his faith by re-performing his Bar Mitzvah. He inspired other mature adults to also reaffirm their faith in later years as well.

Leonard took much pride in being a lifelong member of the Newport News community. His immense contributions to the community meant a great deal to Leonard. Leonard was an active member of the Peninsula Rotary Club, the American Cancer Society, Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants, and was a member of the boards of TNCC, The Newport News Library, and a bank. For many years Leonard ran a professional CPA firm. He was the consummate accounting professional as well as a friend and mentor to all in his firm and in the accounting profession.

One of his biggest regrets in life, was a physical problem that kept him from World War II service. To serve his part, he joined as an active member of the Virginia Protective Force. Leonard's primary concern and devotion was to his family, the care of his mother, before her passing, his wife and children, and extended family.

Leonard is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joan D. Aaron; his children and their spouses, Hugh and Laura Aaron, Debra and Bonnie King; his grandson, Ben Aaron; his brothers and their spouses, Bertram and Gladys Aaron, Cyril and Patti Aaron; his nieces and nephews, Harry and Cynthia Aaron, Jill MacPherson, Scott and Jennifer Aaron; his devoted aide Patricia Wells; and his many close friends.

The world is a much better place because of the story he wrote in his book of life. Leonard Aaron will be remembered for his purity of heart, his kindness, his smile, and the joy he took every day in being alive.

As a next door neighbor of the Aarons for many years on Huntington Avenue, I have many memories of the family. Leonard gave my phone number to Rabbi Finkle who in turn recommended me to my husband, Herb of 57 years. I now reside in Moorestown, NJ and Boynton Beach, Fl.

   Thank you so much, Fred. At first I chose 1941 as the year of Mr. Aaron's graduation, then decided it might have been 1940, so I'm glad you clarified that for me.
