Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
There is more sad news this Friday morning. Kitty Warthan Smith, Class of 1937, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2012 in Newport News at the age of 93.

Kitty Warthan Smith

			NEWPORT NEWS - Catherine W. Smith 'Kitty,' 93, passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012. Born April 17, 1918, to the late James and Rebecca Warthan, she was a lifelong peninsula resident. Kitty was a graduate of Newport News High School in 1937, and also a graduate of Newport News Business College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She retired from First & Merchants National Bank with more than 30 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, P. Philip Smith; brothers, Eugene and Dick Warthan.

She is survived by sons, Douglas P. Smith of Newport News and David B. Smith (Marcia) of Richmond; grandchildren, Alek (Lesley) and Brad (Mandi) of Richmond, Jeffrey (Michelle) of Newport News, Michael of Menominee, Mich.; four great-grandchildren and several devoted nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations may take the form of contributions to First United Methodist Church General Fund, 10246 Warwick Blvd., Newport News, VA 23601.

Burial in Peninsula Memorial Park will be private.

I keep hearing my father's voice at the dinner table, “Hips and pneumonia are the friend of the aged!” Not much consolation, but you have to know the two of them are back at the beach, in that trailer enjoying a cocktail and the setting sun. Kitty once told me after a round of golf with Phil, “She was so happy he played well with me.” That's the kind of lady she will always be.

When I was growing up I remember my great aunt Lena Warthan talking about Catherine, Dick's sister. I send my prayers to Catherine's family @ this time.

David and Doug:
As you well know, Kitty was my second mother; I loved her so much and she cooked the best butter beans on the face of the earth!
I remember numerous vacations with the Smith family at Nags Head, all 4 of us in one room at the Cavalier!
She treated me as a son, and I loved her for that. I will miss her but I am happy to know she is now reunited with Phillip and hopefully cooking those butter beans!
