Newport News High School Class of @ 1935

Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
 There is even more sad news this Saturday morning.  Rouzee Givens, Class of @ 1935, brother of the late Otho Givens ('31) (12 Aug 1913 - 09 June 2006) and the late Josephine Givens Kyle (d. after 2006) passed away on Wednesday, January 08, 2014 at the age of 96.

From the Daily Press - 01/11/14:

                         E. Rouzee Givens
      NEWPORT NEWS - Rouzee Givens, 96, a lifelong Peninsula resident, found eternal rest on January 8th.

He graduated from Newport News High and the Apprentice School - and then secured his mechanical engineering degree from his beloved Virginia Tech. His college studies were interrupted by WWII - where he proudly served as a Captain in the 100th Infantry - earning Bronze Stars for valor - and 2 Purple Hearts.

While at Tech, he married Marjorie Hatfield, who preceded him in death after 45 years of marriage in 1988. He married another wonderful woman, Madaline Miller in 1994, who passed away in 2012.

Also preceding him in death were his brother, Otho and sister, Josephine Kyle, and father, Elmer, and mother, Eleanor.

Surviving are his daughter, Jo Anne Dorneman (Ross), grandchildren, Jeff Dorneman (Elizabeth) and Julie Batt (Robert); and 5 great grandchildren - all from Richmond; 2 step children, Al Miller (Jan) and Lynn Ellmore from Hampton and numerous nieces and nephews.

Rouzee Givens

Rouzee spent 28 years in federal civil service - first at NASA, then at Fort Eustis. He was a lifelong musician and, with Marjorie, played in several regional bands. Since his retirement in 1975, he remained active in church and community affairs.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Hidenwood and the Richmond based professionals at My Home Away from Home, At Home Care Hospice and Spring Arbor of Salisbury who gave him and the family great care and comfort.

There will be a memorial service at 12:30 pm on Monday, January 13, with reception to follow at Hilton Christian Church, 100 James River Drive, Newport News 23601 - where Rouzee was a charter member and Deacon Emeritus. Memorials can be directed to the church or the charity of your choice. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at

Whispering Hope

Words and Music by Alice Hawthorne (11 May 1827 - 22 Nov 1902), 1868

"Alice Hawthorne" was really Setimus Winner, one of the most versatile writers of the mid-19th century.
Winner went from the bird calls of "Listen to the Mocking Bird" to the doggerel nonsense
of "Oh, Where, Oh, Where Has My Little Dog Gone?" to the gentle and optimistic "Whispering Hope."

Soft as the voice of an angel
Breathing a lesson unheard;
Hope with a gentle persuasion
Whispers her comforting word.

Wait till the darkness is over,
Wait till the tempest is done;
Hope for the sunshine tomorrow,
After the shower is gone.

Whispering Hope,
Oh, how welcome thy voice,
Making my heart
in its sorrow rejoice.
