For every beauty there is an eye somewhere to see it.
For every truth there is an ear somewhere to hear it.
For every love there is a heart somewhere to receive it.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somewhere_Out_There_%28James_Horner_song%29:

"Somewhere Out There" is a song written by James Horner, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Its single was released by American recording artists, pop rock icon Linda Ronstadt and R&B musician James Ingram. Originally, it appeared in the 1986 animated film An American Tail, recorded by actors Phillip Glasser and Betsy Cathcart in the role of their fictional characters as Fievel and Tanya Mousekewitz.

Steven Spielberg, the producer of An American Tail, invited songwriters Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil to collaborate with James Horner on four songs for the film's soundtrack, to be completed in a four week timeframe. The composers "felt no pressure to come up with a radio-friendly hit" and were surprised when Spielberg felt "Somewhere Out There" had Top 40 hit potential and recruited world renowned recording artists, Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram, to record a pop version of the song for the film's closing credits..[1] In the main body of the film, "Somewhere Out There" was performed by Phillip Glasser and Betsy Cathcart in the characters of the anthropomorphic mice Fievel and Tanya Mousekewitz. Produced by Ronstadt's regular producer Peter Asher, the single release of the Ronstadt/Ingram track debuted at #31 on the Adult Contemporary chart in Billboard dated 15 November 1986 crossing over to the Billboard Hot 100 dated 20 December 1986 with a #83 debut. In January 1987 "Somewhere Out There" returned Ronstadt to the Top 40 after a four year absence to eventually peak at #2 that March, behind "Jacob's Ladder" by Huey Lewis and the News. One of the last commercially released 45 RPM singles to be certified Gold for US sales of one million units, "Somewhere Out There" was also a major UK hit (peaking at #8), marking Ronstadt's first of three appearances in the UK Top 10...

From Marissa Burton - 01/08/12, 11:47 PM - "Hi!":

Hello --

Well, you know how serendipity works.......I'd been searching all night for a photo of our old house at    5600 Huntington Avenue, had about given up and finally found the website called "north end" that I'm not sure if you're responsible for(?) but in any case, would love to give some "correct" information to add to that site and also would like to say that I've sure enjoyed reminiscing for the last couple hours -- I know my bloodshot eyes are going to regret it tomorrow!!!!! ;)

If you have any info on how to contribute to these pages, please let me know!

thanks,
Marissa J Burton
former NN resident ('67-'81)

Thanks, Marissa - my bloodshot eyes just opened for the day!

It's very simple. Because I'm a control freak, the site is not interactive; you just send me a note and I'll post any information you want! We're always happy to expand our archive.

The site is huge (as you may have noticed). The North End page is but a fraction of the Our Old Neighborhoods section.

Oh, WOW! You lived at 5600 Huntington?!? Being a Stuart Gardens kid myself, I had to look that one up, but I remember it now! I'd be delighted to post The Real Story - thanks so much!

I don't know if you found this section of the site. Due to a server change a couple of years ago, most of the return links at the bottom of the Our Old Stomping Grounds pages are still broken (despite the hundreds I have updated throughout other portions of the site); just use the back button on your computer, and I think you'll enjoy them. If I didn't spend so much of my time preparing daily newsletters for my 650 + subscribers, I'd have more time to work on those broken links!

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of NC - 01/09/12 - "Navy films from WWII":

1940's Aircraft Carrier - Rare Movie !!!!!!
Aircraft Carrier rare movie with stunning photography from US planes AS IT HAPPENED, not recreated !!!!!

Again, this is actual real time aerial battle footage on gun mounted cameras as it actually happened !!!!!!
This is 16mm color (not "colorized") footage that you may not have seen of carrier action in the Pacific. Not many color shots in the '40s - extremely expensive then, with a complicated and exacting processing process.

WOWZERONI-RINI! Thanks so much for sharing this, Dools!

From Stacy Dorn Davis ('64) of CA - 01/09/12 - "Abbott and Costello in the computer age":

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today

You have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello, and too old to REALLY understand computers, to fully appreciate this. For those of us who sometimes get flustered by our computers, please read on...

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous sketch, 'Who's on First?' might have turned out something like this:

COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO:
Thanks I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm thinking about buying a computer.

ABBOTT:
 Mac?

COSTELLO:
 No, the name's Lou.

ABBOTT:
 Your computer?

COSTELLO
: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.

ABBOTT:
 Mac?

COSTELLO:
I told you, my name's Lou.

ABBOTT:
 What about Windows?

COSTELLO:
Why? Will it get stuffy in here?

ABBOTT:
Do you want a computer with Windows?

COSTELLO:
I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?

ABBOTT:
 Wallpaper.

COSTELLO:
Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.

ABBOTT:
 Software for Windows?

COSTELLO:
No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?

ABBOTT:
 Office.

COSTELLO:
Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

ABBOTT:
 I just did.

COSTELLO:
 You just did what?

ABBOTT:
 Recommend something.

COSTELLO:
 You recommended something?

ABBOTT:
 Yes.

COSTELLO:
 For my office?

ABBOTT:
 Yes.

COSTELLO:
OK, what did you recommend for my office?

ABBOTT:
 Office.

COSTELLO:
 Yes, for my office!

ABBOTT:
 I recommend Office with Windows.

COSTELLO:
I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say I'm sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I need?

ABBOTT:
 Word.

COSTELLO:
 What word?

ABBOTT:
 Word in Office.

COSTELLO:
The only word in office is office.

ABBOTT:
The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO:
Which word in office for windows?

ABBOTT:
The Word you get when you click the blue 'W'.

COSTELLO:
I'm going to click your blue 'w' if you don't start with some straight answers. What about financial bookkeeping? You have anything I can track my money with?

ABBOTT:
 Money.

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO:
I need money to track my money?

ABBOTT:
It comes bundled with your computer.

COSTELLO:
 What's bundled with my computer?

ABBOTT:
 Money.

COSTELLO:
 Money comes with my computer?

ABBOTT:
 Yes. No extra charge.

COSTELLO:
I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?

ABBOTT:
 One copy.

COSTELLO:
Isn't it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT:
Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO:
They can give you a license to copy money?

ABBOTT:
 Why not? THEY OWN IT!

A few days later...

ABBOTT:
Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO:
How do I turn my computer off?

ABBOTT:
 Click on 'START'.

     Thanks, Stacy!

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of NC -  01/09/12 - "First public airing of God Bless America":

The link below will take you to a video showing the very first public singing of “GOD BLESS AMERICA.” But before you watch, you should also know the story of the song. The time was 1940. America was still in a terrible economic depression. Hitler was taking over Europe and Americans were afraid we’d have to go to war. It was a time of hardship and worry for most Americans. This was the era just before TV, when radio shows were HUGE, and American families sat around their radios in the evenings, listening to their favorite entertainers – and no entertainer of that era was bigger than Kate Smith. Kate was also large in size, and the popular phrase still used today is in deference to her, “It ain’t over till the fat lady sings.” Kate Smith might not have made it big in the age of TV, but with her voice coming over the radio, she was the biggest star of her time.

Kate was also very patriotic. It hurt her to see Americans so depressed and afraid of what the next day would bring. She had hope for America, and faith in her fellow Americans. She wanted to do something to cheer them up, so she went to the famous American song-writer, Irving Berlin (also wrote “White Christmas”) and asked him to write a song that would make Americans feel good again about their country. When she described what she was looking for, he said he had just the song for her. He went to his files and found a song that he had written, but never published, 22 years before - way back in 1917. He gave it to Kate Smith and she worked on it with her studio orchestra. She and Irving Berlin were not sure how the song would be received by the public, but both agreed they would not take any profits from “God Bless America”– any profits would go to the Boy Scouts of America. Over the years, the Boy Scouts have received millions of dollars in royalties from this song.

This video starts out with Kate Smith coming into the radio studio with the orchestra and an audience. She introduces the new song for the very first time, and starts singing. After the first couple verses, with her voice in the background still singing, scenes are shown from the 1940 movie, “You’re In The Army Now.” At the 4:20 mark of the video you see a young actor in the movie, sitting in an office, reading a paper – it’s Ronald Reagan. Frank Sinatra considered Kate Smith the best singer of her time, and said when he and a million other guys first heard her sing “God Bless America” on the radio, they all pretended to have “dust in their eyes” as they wiped away a tear or two…

To this day, “God Bless America” stirs our patriotic feelings and pride in our country. Back in 1940, When Kate Smith went looking for a song to raise the spirits of her fellow Americans, I doubt she realized just how successful the results would be – for her fellow Americans during those years of hardship and worry, and for many generations of Americans to follow… Now that you know the story of the song, I hope you will enjoy it and treasure it even more. God Bless America!

NOW HERE IS HOW "GOD BLESS AMERICA" SHOULD BE SUNG !

This is so beautiful.

WOW. Thanks so much, Dools! As you know, many years ago   Miles (Nowitzky - Granby HS - '50) (11 Jan 1930 - 07 May 2005) and       Eleanor (Buckley Nowitzky - '59 - of NC) gave me an original copy of Irving Berlin's sheet music for this amazing anthem.  When we were "lightening our load" I gave it to          our #1 son, Lewis (Harty - Hillsboro HS, IL - '89 - of IL) because I knew he would cherish it as I did - and because he does such a splendid job of singing it himself. Printed right on the music is Irving Berlin's strict injunction to sing it just as it was written without added frills or embellishments. What a pity that is so often ignored in our our own time.

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) of VA - 01/09/12 - "Blonde's Last Plane Ride":

This is the story of the poor blonde flying in a two-seater airplane with just the pilot.

He has a heart attack and dies. She frantically calls a May Day:

"May Day!! May Day!! Help me!! Help me!! My pilot had a heart attack and is dead. And I don't know how to fly. Help me!! Please help me!!"

All of a sudden she hears a voice over the radio saying:

"This is the tower. I have received your message and I will talk you through it. I've had a lot of experience with this kind of problem. Now, just relax. Everything will be fine!! Now give me your height and position."

She says, "I'm 5'4" and I'm in the front seat."

"O.K." says the voice from the tower. "Repeat after me: Our Father. . . Who art in Heaven. . . ."

     Thanks, Norris Sweetie!

FINALLY:

From http://www.ajokeaday.com - 01/09/12:

The National Game warden put out a warning to all hikers in his area. Warning that they should wear small bells on their boots so not to startle the bears. To distinguish the grizzly bear the notice read-- small bears droppings are small with nut and berries in it. Grizzly bear droppings are much larger with nuts and berries and little tiny bells in it.

Somewhere Out There

Written by James Horner (b. 14 Aug 1953), Barry Mann (b. 09 Feb 1939),
and
Cynthia Weil (b. 18 Oct 1940) for the movie An American Tail, 1986

Recorded by Linda Ronstadt (b. 15 July 1946) and James Ingram (b. 16 Feb 1952)

Somewhere out there beneath the pale moonlight
Someone's thinking of me and loving me tonight

Somewhere out there someone's saying a prayer
That we'll find one another in that big somewhere out there

And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star

And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky

Somewhere out there if love can see us through
Then we'll be together somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true

And even though I know how very far apart we are
It helps to think we might be wishing on the same bright star

And when the night wind starts to sing a lonesome lullaby
It helps to think we're sleeping underneath the same big sky

Somewhere out there if love can see us through
Then we'll be together somewhere out there
Out where dreams come true
