Ruth,
I'm very sorry to hear about Mr. Swain's passing. I know you were very close and affectionately referred to him as "brother". May God be with you and your family during this difficult time.

NEWPORT NEWS - John Raymond Swain was born April 5, 1927, in Rocky Mount, N.C. He graduated from Newport News High in 1944; was raised and retired and passed away in Newport News Jan. 5, 2009. After high school he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in WWII and Korea. He began reading the newspaper at age five. Writing beautiful poetry and prose continued to be his source of joy throughout the years. He shared many poems with me and has encouraged my own literary efforts. "Daddy" maintained a gifted command of verbal and written expression. Other memorable talents and activities included his sense of humor, love for playing the harmonica, Bible study, and completing hundreds of crossword puzzles. He moved our family from Hampton, Va., to Greenville, Miss., in 1966 to work for Lewis Grocery Company with his older brother, Howard. He later worked as a meat manager for the Jitney Jungle grocery store in Greenville. While in Greenville, my dad became a baptized member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church. He was a church elder and filled in for our pastor on numerous occasions with eloquent sermons. Mr. Swain is survived by two daughters, Dr. Becky Conerly and husband Lee, of Byram, Miss., Patricia Bolton and husband, Ray, of Florence, Miss.; son, David Swain and wife Adele, of North Attleboro, Maine; grandchildren, Bethany and Brighton Paul of Byram, Miss., Kelly and Mark Bolton of Florence, Miss., and Zachary and Elana Swain of North Attleboro, Maine; three great-grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Ruth Masters, of Newport News; and nieces and nephews. A celebration of life service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the care of Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave. Hampton, VA 23666. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at dailypress.com/guestbooks.
