Adia Melchert is here! She weighed 7 lbs. and 5 oz. and is cute. Looks like her mom Danielle is holding her.
Can't wait for my turn.

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 01/04/10 - "Throw some cold water on the Captain.":

Hi, Carol:
Dave Spriggs ('64 - of VA) cracked me up with his comment about vocalist Beverly Bivens of the musical group We Five and I am glad you posted his memory of "You Were On My Mind" from his days as a "Midshipman" at Annapolis.
That kind of masculine honesty is refreshing, but not surprising from a Naval Officer who stood many a Midnight Watch on the bridge of a destroyer.
Take a cold shower, Capn!!!
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

   Thanks, Major Madagan!

Maxine's Perfect Solution to Senior Health Care

Here is the solution:

While discussing the upcoming Universal Health Care Program with my sister-in-law the other day, I think we have found the solution. I am sure you have heard the ideas that if you're a senior you need to suck it up and give up the idea that you need any health care. A new hip? Unheard of. We simply can't afford to take care of you anymore. You don't need any medications for your high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, etc. Let's take care of the young people. After all, they will be ruling the world very soon.

So here is the solution. When you turn 70, you get a gun and three bullets. You are allowed to shoot one senator and two representatives. Of course, you will be sent to prison where you will get three meals a day, a roof over your head and all the health care you need! New teeth, great! Need glasses, no problem! New hip, knee, kidney, lung, heart? Well, bring it on. And who will be paying for all of this? The same government that just told you that you are too old for health care. And, since you are a prisoner, you don't have to pay any income tax.

WILD GIGGLES! "Not too shabby!" Thanks, Joyce!

From Joe Madagan ('57) of FL - 01/04/10 - "Carly Simon "Never Been Gone"":

Hi, Carol:
While driving recently, and listening to the car radio my attention was drawn to an interview with Carly Simon.
She made an interesting comment about the song she wrote entitled "Anticipation" which she wrote while waiting to go out on a date with Cat Stevens. I have always liked this song, and enjoyed the catsup commercial that featured this tune, and it revealed a bit more of her interesting past.
As the interview progressed, I was able to pick up the earlier portion that I missed before tuning into this station. She was promoting her latest album entitled "Never Been Gone" which was promoted by one of her children.
Not one to pass up on an opportunity to write to you, and let the TYPHOON Nation know about some musical discovery, one of the songs on the album is very interesting. "Let the Riverrun" (Not mis-spelled) speaks of Israel with a line "Come the New Jerusalem" in the refrain. Not what I expected from Carly Simon, but you never know.
TYPHOON Regards,
Joe Madagan ('57) of FL

   COOL BEANS! Thanks, Adonis!

From Mark Hutcherson ('66) of VA - 01/04/10 - "FISHING STORY":

I finally got around to going fishing this morning but after a while I ran out of worms.

Then I saw a cottonmouth snake with a frog in his mouth, and frogs are good bass bait.

Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth, I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog and put it in my bait bucket.

Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit.

I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth.

His eyes rolled back, he went limp, I released him into the lake without incident, and carried on my fishing with the frog.

A little later I felt a nudge on my foot.

There was that same snake with two frogs in his mouth.

    Thanks, Mark!

From Norris Perry (Warwick HS - '59) of VA - 01/04/10 - "Tips For Surviving 2010":

Ten Great Tips For Surviving 2010

1. Stay out of trouble.
2. Aim for greater heights.
3. Stay focused on your job.
4. Exercise to maintain good health.
5. Practice team work.
6. Rely on your trusted partner to watch your back. Take your time trusting others.
7. Save for rainy days.
8. Rest and relax.
9. Always take time to smile.
10. Realize that nothing is impossible.

This should make you smile:

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway,

The good fortune to run into the ones I do, and

The eyesight to tell the difference.

Now, I think you're supposed to share this with 5 or 6, maybe 10 others. Oh heck, give it to a bunch of your friends if you can remember who they are!

Always Remember This:

You don't stop laughing because you grow old,

You grow old because you stop laughing!!!

   GIGGLES!  Thanks, Norris!

From Bobby Turpin ('58) of VA - 01/04/10 - "   Freddie McDowell ('56 - of ID) 1955-56 NNHS State Championship Basketball Team":

Hi Carol,

Sincere wishes to you and your family to have a Happy and Healthy New Year 2010.  Thank you, for all you do to keep NNHS memories alive.

Could you inquire, for me, on the Website to see if anyone has Freddie McDowell's address, or phone number, as I have the 1955-56 State Basketball Championship Trophy given to NNHS.  I would like to mail it to him in appreciation of his efforts as he was the starting guard on a great team.  I'm sure his teammates and Coach Bill Chambers would agree.  I mailed Coach Chambers  the 1956-57 State Championship Trophy, as he lives in Alexander, Al.  In addition, Coach Chambers was also the Coach of the 1955-56 State Championship Team. The 1957-58 State Championship Trophy was presented by our Class (1958) to Coach "Lefty" Driesell, at our 50th reunion in May 2008.  I think it would be very appropriate in light of the recent correspondence concerning Freddie McDowell, and his health issues, that he would be the recipient of this trophy.  Thank you,    Eddie Nichols ('62 - of Northern VA), for the informative information concerning Freddie McDowell.

As far as I know those were the only three State Championship Basketball Trophies in city storage as the others had disappeared in bygone years.
Bobby Turpin
NNHS 1958

Bobby, even knowing you for the extraordinarily generous man that you are, you have the power every now and then to completely take my breath away!

I sent your note to Eddie, as I think he knows the fastest route to Freddie.

   Thank you so much!

From ArcaMax Jokes - 01/04/09:

Driving along an outback road in Australia, I spied an exotic bird flying overhead. The creature was black, with a huge and striking red-and-gold beak. "Hey, look! A toucan!" I yelled.

"Toucan nothin'," said the Aussie passenger. "It's a crow with its beak stuck in a McDonald's fries' carton."

Rest Home

Aunt Mary, a spinster of 92, had finally consented to go to a rest home, but strictly on a two-week-trial basis. Consequently, she took a small overnight case with only the bare essentials.

A couple of days later her niece was surprised to get a phone call from her demanding more clothes.

"Please bring me that good black silk, my lavender print, the brown wool..." and she went on and on. Finally after a brief questioning from her niece, Aunt Mary expostulated:

"There are MEN in this place!"

Please Be Careful with My Heart

Probably written by José Mari Chan
(b. 11 Mar 1945)

Recorded by José Mari Chan
(b. 11 Mar 1945)

If you love me like you tell me
Please be careful with my heart
You can take it just don't break it
Or my world will fall apart

You are my first romance
And I'm willing to take a chance
That till life is through
I'll still be loving you

I will be true to you
Just a promise from you will do
From the very start
Please be careful with my heart

I love you and you know I do
There'll be no one else for me
Promise I'll be always true
For the world and all to see

Love has heard some lies softly spoken
And I have had my heart badly broken
I've been burned and I've been hurt before

So I know just how you feel
Trust my love is real for you
I'll be gentle with your heart
I'll caress it like the morning dew

I'll be right beside you forever
I won't let our world fall apart
From the very start I'll be careful with your heart
