Dear Friends and Schoolmates,   

   There is sad news to report this Saturday.    Edward Tilles, father of the late    Sandra Tilles Snyder ('65) (02 Aug 1947 - 11 Mar 1999), and former father-in-law of   Marc Snyder ('65) of NC, passed away in Newport News on Thursday, January 02, 2014 at the age of 86.  May his memory be for a blessing always.

NEWPORT NEWS - Edward B. Tilles passed away on Thursday, January 2, at the age of 86.

He is preceded in death by his first wife, Ellen, and daughter Sandra. He is survived by his wife, Arlene; his son, Douglas and daughter-in-law, Mary; one nephew, Loren Tilles; four grandchildren, Michael Snyder, Karen Snyder Parks, Jeremy and Brittany Lawson; two great-grandchildren, Haley and Kayla Snyder.

He was a native of Teaneck, New Jersey and a resident of Newport News for 60 years. He was an Engineer for Fermi Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois for seventeen years, and retired from CEBAF in 1986.

He proudly served on the Naval Vessel USS Montague, in the South Pacific, in WWII. He was a member of Rodef Sholom Temple in Hampton, and a member of the Peninsula Fine Arts Center of Newport News.

A graveside service will be performed by Rabbi Dror, on January 5, 2:00 p.m., at the Hebrew Cemetery, Hampton, Va. View and post condolences on our online guestbook at

I knew Ed because he was one of THE first employees of CEBAF (now Jefferson Lab). He made important contributions to the then new project. More importantly, he was a good and honorable man who will be missed.
