NEWPORT NEWS - Katherine
Grice Bonnett "Kitty", as she was affectionately known by all, passed
away on December 29, 2010, after a long, hard battle with Alzheimer's
disease. Kitty was born in Wilson, N.C., to Montie and Clarence Grice. Kitty moved to Newport News as a young child. Kitty went to Newport News Public Schools and finished her education at Newport News High School. After high school, Kitty met and fell in love with George Martin Bonnett. Kitty and George later married and had two children, Marty and Robin Bonnett. Even though she was busy raising a family and being a homemaker, Kitty found time to be a secretary with Newport News Public Schools. |

Kitty and George moved to Kitty Hawk, N.C., after her retirement from Menchville High School. They built their new house there, with their five grandchildren excited to help make it a home. After settling in Kitty Hawk, Kitty could be found volunteering her time at Hotline Thrift Store. Kitty called the Outer Banks of North Carolina, in Kitty Hawk, home until her husband George passed away in 2006. She then moved back to Newport News, where she resided until her death. Kitty was preceded in death by her parents, Montie and Clarence Grice; her beloved husband of 61 years, George; and her brother-in-law, Vincent "Jimmy" D'Errico. Left behind to cherish her memory are her son, Marty Bonnett of South Carolina; her daughter, Robin McArthur of Hampton; daughter-in-law, Debbie Yaccarino and husband, Steve, of Kitty Hawk. Boomie, the name given to her by her grandchildren, will be remembered by her five grandchildren, Shea McArthur of Newport News, Brie McArthur of Hampton, Jamie Bonnett and his wife, Laura, of Greensboro, N.C., Tripp McArthur of Newport News, and Ashley Bonnett of Astoria, N.Y. ; and two great-grandchildren, Chesney Ward and Noah Bonnett. Also left to cherish her memory are her sister, Romaine D'Errico; nieces Cathy Sullivan of Newport News, Lynn and Bob Garrison of Newport News, Sharon and Dexter Lilly of Newport News; great-niece Jessica Lilly; and great-nephew Sam Garrison. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at the Piedmont at Warwick Forrest for all their hard work and dedication to the health and well being of Kitty. The nurses who were with her every day did a wonderful job making connections with her, taking care her, treating her with dignity and most importantly, making her comfortable at the end of her journey. For that, her family is forever grateful. A memorial service will be held at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home in Newport News, on Wednesday, January 5, at 7 p.m., with Rev. Clarence Hilling officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Alzheimer's research at: , P.O. Box 96011, Washington DC 20090-6011 or by phone at 1-800-272-3900. Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee,
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy riven side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure,
Save me from its guilt and pow'r.
Not the labors of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law's demands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to Thy cross I cling;
Naked come, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly,
Wash me, Savior, or I die!
While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.
