Dear Friends and Schoolmates,
Beginning on Christmas Eve, every time I get into the shower, The Four Lads start singing this old song to me. First of all, I think it's a rather strange choice for this time of year. Secondly, I can't figure out how (or why) those guys keep getting in there, but I believe once we use this song in a Newsletter, they'll stop their goofy shenanigans.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No,_Not_Much:
"No, Not Much" is a
popular
song published in
1955. The music was written by
Robert Allen, the lyrics by
Al Stillman. The song was one of a large number of Stillman-Allen compositions that were recorded by The Four Lads. The recording by The Four Lads was released by Columbia Records as catalog number 40629. It first reached the Billboard magazine charts on January 28, 1956. On the Disk Jockey chart, it peaked at #2; on the Best Seller chart, at #4; on the Juke Box chart, at #4; on the composite chart of the top 100 songs, it reached #3. The song was subsequently recorded by The Vogues and The Smoke Ring, both of whom charted their versions in 1969. This song also appeared in an episode of the TV show "Scrubs." It was sung by the hospital employee a capella band in the 4th season episode "My Ocardial Infarction". It is also one of the songs of its era included in the Broadway musical "Forever Plaid". |

From Domi O'Brien ('64) of NH - 01/01/11 - "Happy New Year!":
It's a bright day
here in NH-- the sun is shining and the morning, as well as the year,
feels new. Last night we baked breads-- soda bread, Irish brown, beer bread, vortlimpor, nissua, stollen, and corn bread. Today the butters and cheeses will be on the tables, along with cocktail sausages and shrimp and chicken wings and pulled pork and herring and veggies and dip. Hot spiced cider. The candles and are lined up and the pewter cups frozen with an inch of ice in them for the fire-and-ice ritual based on the Norse creation story from the Prose Eddas (the Celts don't have a clear creation story, so we use the Norse one at the turning of the secular year-- Celtic New Year is Samhain, end of October/early November). We will make toasts to those we honour, and boasts about what we've accomplished in the past year, and make oath about what we intend to accomplish in the new year, and take omens. The marinated duck is slow-roasting surrounded by root vegetables and apples in cider and wine, with herbs. The prime rib will join it later, surrounded by root vegetables and mushrooms. There is an Irish smoked pork loin which will be studded with cloves and brushed with cider and roasted also, and a nice wild-caught salmon fillet brushed with honey and salt will be cooked last. We'll start with a soup containing lentils (for good financial luck) and other vegetables, and progress to the fish, flesh, and fowl and the salads and sides, with the plainer breads; the sweet dessert breads, a Death by Chocolate cake, possibly a gingerbread also, and chocolates and nuts will finish the meal. There will be sparkling cider and selzer and juice and wine. May you all have plenty in the new year-- enough for yourselves and to share with those less fortunate. May you be sustained by family and friends, and sustain them in return. May you be hale and healthy! Catch the blessings sent you! Domi
YUM-YUM!!!
Thanks so much, Domi! I trust y'all enjoyed your marvelous feast; rich
New Year's blessings to you all!

Happy New Year Carol, Jan.
1, 2011 Many of the TV reviews are painting 2010 as a year of hardships endured. To me it was an opportunity to kick the inevitable urn one more year ahead. Fred (developer of the four lap mile - gym class 1941-45) ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Fred W. Field Fullerton & Loma Linda, CA fwfield@juno.com

No, Not
Much
Lyrics by

Music by
Robert Allen, 1955
Recorded by
The
Four Lads, 1956
(05 Febr 1927 01 Oct 2000)
I don't want my arms around you, no, not much
I don't bless the day I found you, no, not much
I don't need you like the stars don't need the sky
I won't love you longer than the day I die
You don't please me when you squeeze me, no, not much
My head's the lightest from your very slightest touch
Baby, if you ever go, could I take it, maybe so
Oh, but would I like it, no, not much
Like a ten cent soda doesn't cost a dime
I don't want you near me only all time
You don't thrill me when you hold me, no not much
My brain gets hazy from your cool and crazy touch
Baby, if you ever go, could I take it, maybe so
Oh, but would I like it, no, not much
No, not much
