Dear Friends and Schoolmates,

Today's Newsletter theme was first used exactly five years ago today - and is just as appropriate today as it was then, because "when I woke up this morning, you were on my mind": - There's some great background material here.....

  From Ed Nichols ('62) of Northern VA - 01/01/10 - "    Freddie McDowell ('56 - of ID)":

I want to wish you and
Paul (Harty - Bardolph HS, IL - '61 - of IL) and your rather large family a wonderful new year that is healthy and prosperous for all.

Freddie McDowell, NNHS Class of 1956 and member of the State Championship basketball team where he played point guard I believe, suffered a heart attack that at first was believed to be critical in severity but was later determined to NOT BE as bad as initially feared. He is hoping to come home from the hospital any day. Freddie has been living in the Boise, ID area for years where he settled after a 20 year career in the Air Force. Freddie's mother was my aunt's (by marriage) sister so I from time to time receive information on Freddie. He and my brother, Bill Nichols, NNHS Class of 1955, were fast friends at Stonewall Jackson Elementary and then NNHS. Freddie has a son that lives in Boise and a grandson, age 6, with another grandchild due soon.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, for this website and the love that shows through you every day. We, NNHS alumni and friends, are the fortunate ones.

As always, your friend, Ed Nichols, NNHS Class of 1962

From Joyce Lawrence Cahoon ('65) of VA - 12/31/09 - "New Aspirin":

Something that we can do to help ourselves.  Nice to know.

Bayer is making crystal aspirin to dissolve under the tongue. They work much faster than the tablets.

Why keep aspirin by your bedside?
About Heart Attacks

There are other symptoms of an heart attack besides the pain on the left arm.
One must also be aware of an intense pain on the chin, as well as nausea and lots of sweating, however these symptoms may also occur less frequently.
Note: There may be NO pain in the chest during a heart attack.  The majority of people (about 60%) who  had a heart attack during their sleep, did not wake up.  However, if it occurs, the chest pain may wake you up from your deep sleep.

If that happens, immediately dissolve two aspirins in your mouth and swallow them with a bit of water.

- phone a neighbor or a family member who lives very close by
- say "heart attack!"
- say that you have taken 2 aspirins..
- take a seat on a chair or sofa near the front door, and wait for their arrival and...
~ do NOT lie down ~

From My Husband, Paul Harty (Bardolph HS, IL - '61) of IL - 01/01/10 - "We Didn't Start the Fire":

This is a bit nostalgic.

Whether you are a Billy Joel fan or not, you probably remember his great song, "We Didn't Start the Fire."

Here it is, set to pictures... very, very cool. Had to share this one. It's a neat flashback through the past half century. I never did know the words. Turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy a review of 50 years of history in less than 3 minutes! Thanks to Billy Joel and some guy from the University of Chicago with a lot of spare time and Google.

Top left gives you full right lets you pause. Bottom left shows the year. The older you are, the more pictures you will recognize. Anyone over age 65 should remember over 90% of what they see, but it's great at any age.

   WAY COOL! Thanks, Paul!

From ArcaMax Jokes - 01/01/09:

Before heading out on a family hike, we stood at the trailhead reviewing map pinned to a bulletin board. A red arrow on the map that said "You are here" caught my six year old's attention. Pointing to it he asked. "How do they know that?"

Selling Vacuum Cleaners

A little old woman answered a knock on the door one day, only to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner.

"Good morning," said the young man.

"If I could take a couple of minutes of your time, I would like to demonstrate the very latest in high-powered vacuum cleaners.

"Go away!" said the old woman. "I haven't got any money!" and she proceeded to close the door.

Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed it wide open.

"Don't be too hasty!" he said. "Not until you have at least seen my demonstration."

In addition, with that, he emptied a bucket of horse manure onto her hallway carpet.

"If this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet, Madam, I will personally eat the remainder."

The old woman stepped back and said, "Well I hope you've got a darned good appetite, because they cut off my electricity this morning."

You Were on My Mind

Written by
Sylvia Fricker, 1964
(b. 19 Sept 1940)

Recorded by We Five, 1965

When I woke up this morning
You were on my mind
And you were on my mind
I got troubles, whoa-whoa
I got worries, whoa-whoa
I got wounds to bind

So I went to the corner
Just to ease my pains

I got troubles, whoa-whoa
I got worries, whoa-whoa
I came home again

When I woke up this morning
You were on my mi-i-i-ind and
You were on my mind
I got troubles, whoa-whoa
I got worries, whoa-whoa
I got wounds to bind

Hey, I got a feelin'
Down in my sho-oo-oo-oes, said-a
Way down in my sho-oo-oes
Yeah, I got to ramble, whoa-whoa
I got to move on, whoa-whoa
I got to walk away my blues

When I woke up this morning
You were on my mind
You were on my mind
I got troubles, whoa-whoa
I got worries, whoa-whoa
I got wounds to bind
